Aosan, South Korea – Governor Kim Tae-heum of South Chungcheong Province has secured a significant investment from Corning Incorporated, a leading global manufacturer of specialty glass and ceramics. The investment agreement was signed during Governor Kim's visit to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
Under the agreement, Corning will invest in upgrading its production facilities at its Aosan plant to introduce next-generation processes for advanced materials. While specific investment amounts and product details were not disclosed at the company's request, the move is expected to strengthen South Chungcheong's position as a global hub for the display industry.
"Corning has been a trusted partner in South Chungcheong for 30 years," said Governor Kim. "We are committed to providing full support to Corning as they continue to grow and thrive in our province."
Corning has a long-standing presence in South Korea, with four facilities including Corning Precision Materials, Corning Technology Center Korea, Samsung Corning Advanced Glass, and Korea Corning. The company has been manufacturing high-performance display glass substrates, mobile cover glass such as Corning Gorilla Glass, and automotive interior display glass.
Corning's investment comes as the company celebrates its 50th anniversary of operations in Korea. In September 2023, Corning announced plans to invest in advanced materials development and manufacturing capacity expansion over the next five years.
The investment agreement is seen as a major boost for South Chungcheong's economy, creating new jobs and strengthening the region's manufacturing base. The province and the city of Aosan have pledged to provide full support to Corning, including expediting administrative procedures for the investment project.
