Anyang – The Anyang Cultural Foundation is launching an open call for a private living culture and arts space support project to expand citizens' opportunities to enjoy culture and arts in their daily lives and to revitalize the local everyday arts ecosystem. The core of this project is to provide financial support to private spaces operating in various forms, such as galleries, workshops, bookstores, and cafes, so they can serve as hubs for everyday arts activities.

The foundation will accept applications until June 8 next month, selecting a total of seven spaces, with each selected space receiving up to 4 million won. This demonstrates the foundation's commitment to providing practical assistance to privately led everyday arts activities, thereby creating an environment where citizens can more easily access and participate in culture and arts.

Everyday Arts, Permeating Citizens' Lives

Everyday arts refer to activities where ordinary citizens, not professional artists, proactively enjoy and create culture and arts in their daily lives. In the past, the emphasis was primarily on expert-centric artistic activities, but recently, with the increasing importance of quality of life and leisure activities, interest in everyday arts has exploded. Manifesting in various forms such as painting, playing musical instruments, writing, crafts, and photography, everyday arts bring positive effects like stress relief, self-realization, and community building, invigorating citizens' lives.

Anyang City has also been striving to improve citizens' access to culture and arts in line with this trend. In particular, supporting workshops, bookstores, and cafes – spaces that citizens visit daily, rather than specialized art spaces – to function as hubs for everyday arts is a very meaningful endeavor. This encourages citizens to naturally participate in and experience artistic activities in familiar spaces without having to specifically seek out dedicated art venues. For example, small exhibitions could be held in local cafes, citizens could directly create crafts in workshops, and poetry readings or small concerts could be hosted in bookstores.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria: Conditions for Open Cultural Spaces

The target for this support project includes private everyday arts spaces such as workshops, bookstores, cafes, practice rooms, and galleries that possess a business registration certificate or a unique identification number. The purpose is to discover spaces that go beyond simple hobbies and have a certain scale of facilities and operational systems, along with the willingness to continuously support everyday arts activities.

While specific selection criteria are not explicitly stated, the following factors are generally expected to be considered:

Specificity and Feasibility of the Project Plan: Evaluation of how specific and realistically executable the proposed everyday arts programs are.
Contribution to Everyday Arts Revitalization: Consideration of how effectively the space can encourage local residents' participation in everyday arts and how much it can contribute to the development of local culture and arts.
Suitability and Utilization of the Space: Assessment of whether the proposed programs align well with the characteristics of the space and whether the space can be efficiently utilized to carry out various activities.
Novelty and Originality: Additional points may be given to spaces that offer ideas or original content that differentiate them from existing programs.
Competence of the Operating Entity: Comprehensive evaluation of the operating entity's understanding of everyday arts, program planning and execution capabilities, and participant management skills.
The foundation plans to select seven spaces through a transparent and fair screening process. The selected spaces can use the support funds for various purposes, including program operating costs, material costs, publicity expenses, and facility improvement costs, which will be of significant help for their practical operations.

Ripple Effect of the Everyday Arts Support Project

The Anyang Cultural Foundation's support project is expected to bring about several positive ripple effects beyond mere financial assistance.

Expanded Opportunities for Citizens to Enjoy Culture and Arts: By being able to access various everyday arts programs in familiar private spaces, citizens who previously had low accessibility to culture and arts can participate without burden. This will contribute to enhancing citizens' cultural sensitivity and improving their quality of life.
Strengthening the Local Everyday Arts Ecosystem: Through the grants, private spaces can more stably plan and operate everyday arts programs. This will strengthen connections with local everyday arts clubs and organizations and play a crucial role in discovering talented everyday artists, thereby expanding the base of local culture and arts.
Contribution to Local Economic Revitalization: When everyday arts activities become vibrant in private spaces, citizens will naturally flock to the areas around these spaces, which can positively impact the revitalization of local commercial districts. Indirect economic effects from the sale of everyday arts materials and the employment of instructors can also be expected.
Enhancing Anyang City's Image as a Cultural City: Citizen-centered everyday arts revitalization policies will contribute to Anyang City's development into a city of cultural sophistication. This can raise the city's brand value and serve as an important factor in making Anyang a more livable city.
Expansion of the Social Function of Art: Art that permeates daily life beyond the realm of professional art contributes to citizens' emotional stability and enhanced communication, ultimately fostering healthy communities.

Anyang Cultural Foundation's Continuous Efforts

In addition to this private everyday arts space support project, the Anyang Cultural Foundation is making continuous efforts for the development of culture and arts in Anyang City in various ways. It has successfully hosted large-scale cultural and artistic events such as the Anyang Citizens' Festival and the Anyang Public Art Project (APAP), expanding citizens' opportunities to enjoy culture, and is pursuing multifaceted projects including supporting local artists and operating cultural and artistic education programs.

In particular, the foundation recognizes the importance of everyday arts, where citizens directly participate and lead, and is consistently developing policies to systematically support them. This open call project is also part of that effort, showing the foundation's commitment to respecting private creativity and autonomy while providing necessary financial and administrative support.

It is hoped that the seven selected private everyday arts spaces will enrich Anyang City's cultural diversity and serve as beloved gathering places that inspire artistic creativity in citizens' daily lives. We hope that with the continuous support of the Anyang Cultural Foundation and the active participation of citizens, Anyang City can grow into a true everyday arts-centered city.
