Daejeon, South Korea – In a bid to bolster the local economy and alleviate the financial burdens faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and small businesses, Chungnam Province and its 15 municipalities have joined forces with financial institutions. The agreement, signed on December 27th at a provincial government meeting, outlines a comprehensive plan to provide increased financial support and foster economic growth.
The recent economic downturn has posed significant challenges for businesses in Chungnam Province. In response, the provincial government, in collaboration with the Chungnam Credit Guarantee Foundation, Chungnam Economic Promotion Agency, NH Nonghyup Bank, and Hana Bank, has pledged to expand its support programs. Key initiatives include:
Increased Funding: The province will allocate 1.2 trillion won (approximately US$885 million) in policy funds for SMEs and small businesses in 2025, a substantial increase from the previous year's allocation.
Venture Capital Fund: The province aims to expedite the establishment of a 1 trillion won venture capital fund, originally slated for completion in 2031, to provide capital to promising startups.
Expanded Financial Support Centers: The number of financial support centers will be increased to 42, offering more accessible services to businesses in need.
Beyond financial support, the provincial government and municipalities have also agreed to expedite the implementation of previously proposed projects and to actively pursue legislative changes at the national level to support local development.
In a separate announcement at the meeting, the province unveiled a long-term vision for architectural development, titled "Drawing Chungnam, Building the Architecture of the Next 100 Years." This initiative aims to enhance the province's urban landscape and residential environment by leveraging its architectural heritage and fostering innovative design.
Chungnam Governor Kim Tae-heom emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating, "Despite the challenging economic environment, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to fulfilling our responsibilities as a local government. In the coming year, we will redouble our efforts to achieve our five major goals: agricultural and rural structural reform, carbon-neutral economy, Bay Valley development, addressing the low birthrate, and regional balanced development."
The province's comprehensive approach to supporting SMEs and small businesses, coupled with its long-term vision for architectural development, is expected to stimulate economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents of Chungnam Province.
