GIMPO, SOUTH KOREA – A cherished landmark in Gyeonggi Province, the Gimpo 5-Day Market, has triumphantly returned to its vibrant rhythm, once again drawing throngs of local residents and curious visitors. Steeped in over a century of history, this sprawling traditional market, renowned as one of the largest of its kind in the Seoul metropolitan area, operates every fifth day, specifically on the 2nd and 7th of each month. Following a temporary hiatus necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the market's recent resurgence has breathed new life into the Bukbyeon-dong area of Gimpo City.

Transforming the public parking area near 274 Bukbyeon-dong into a bustling marketplace, the Gimpo 5-Day Market is a treasure trove of goods, offering everything from farm-fresh seasonal produce and the region's prized Gimpo rice and rice bran oil to an extensive array of local delicacies and everyday necessities. Gimpo rice, historically favored even by royalty for its exceptional taste enjoyed without accompaniments, is a particularly popular draw, often priced 2-3% lower than in Seoul. Adding to the market's unique offerings is the rice bran oil, a nutritious product rich in calcium, iron, and vitamins, developed by the Gimpo Agricultural Technology Center. Despite limited production, this health-conscious product enjoys considerable demand among market-goers.

The culinary landscape of the Gimpo 5-Day Market is another significant attraction. Visitors can indulge in a diverse selection of Korean comfort food, ranging from comforting noodle soups like janchi guksu (banquet noodles), kongguksu (cold soybean noodle soup), and yeolmu guksu (young radish kimchi noodles) to savory delights such as grilled ribs (deunggalbi), grilled short rib patties (tteokgalbi), and roasted quail. A local specialty gaining wider recognition is olbanggae muk, a unique jelly made from the tubers of arrowhead plants that grow in rice paddies, traditionally served with a refreshing dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth. This distinctive dish has even garnered accolades at the Gyeonggi Local Food Cooking Competition, further cementing its regional culinary significance. "Coming to the Gimpo 5-Day Market is a treat for both the palate and the eyes," shared one delighted visitor. "You not only get a delicious bowl of kalguksu but also a serving of warmheartedness."

Accessibility to the Gimpo 5-Day Market is convenient, with its proximity to the Geolpo Bukbyeon Station on the Gimpo Goldline. The market is also easily reachable via public transportation through the nearby Bukbyeon Transfer Center and the old terminal bus stops. While the usual public parking lot transforms into the market grounds on operating days, ample paid parking options are available near the entrance. To ensure smooth traffic flow on market days, local police are typically present to manage congestion, and limited roadside parking is often permitted.

In adherence to public health guidelines following its reopening, the Gimpo 5-Day Market diligently implements COVID-19 safety protocols, including mandatory temperature checks and mask-wearing at all entrances. Reflecting the resilience of the community, one vendor remarked, "We endured challenging times during the pandemic, but the return of the market and the sound of people's laughter has been truly revitalizing. We hope the Gimpo 5-Day Market will continue to serve as a vibrant hub for the local community for years to come."

Looking ahead, Gimpo City recognizes the significant cultural and tourism potential of the 5-Day Market and is actively exploring strategies to further leverage it. A city official emphasized, "The Gimpo 5-Day Market transcends its function as a mere marketplace; it is a living testament to the region's history and the warmth of its people. We are committed to preserving the unique charm of this traditional market while enhancing its appeal to a wider audience."

The Gimpo 5-Day Market stands as a cherished destination, offering nostalgic experiences for older generations and novel encounters for younger ones. With the next market day approaching on April 7th, an opportunity awaits to immerse oneself in the vibrant atmosphere, discover fresh local produce, and experience the genuine hospitality of Gimpo.
