Outgoing Paraguayan Ambassador to Taiwan, Carlos José Fleitas Rodríguez, has been awarded a prestigious honor by Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in recognition of his significant contributions to strengthening the relationship between the two nations during his tenure.

According to a press statement released by MOFA on Saturday, May 4th, Ambassador Fleitas, who is concluding his approximately three-year assignment, was bestowed with the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung on May 3rd.

In his congratulatory remarks, Minister Lin lauded Ambassador Fleitas for his dedicated efforts in facilitating high-level exchanges between Taiwan and Paraguay. MOFA specifically highlighted the Ambassador's instrumental role in the visit of then-Vice President Lai Ching-te, as a special envoy, to Paraguay for the inauguration of President Santiago Peña Palacios in 2023. This crucial engagement underscored the commitment of both sides to fostering closer ties at the highest levels of government.

MOFA further noted that President Peña himself has made significant contributions to the robust bilateral relationship, having visited Taiwan in both 2023 and 2024. These reciprocal high-level visits have been pivotal in deepening diplomatic ties and exploring avenues for enhanced cooperation across various sectors.

During the award ceremony, Foreign Minister Lin emphasized the shared values that underpin the enduring partnership between Taiwan and Paraguay. "Taiwan and Paraguay uphold the common values of democracy and peace," Minister Lin stated. "Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1957, the two countries have maintained a close and friendly partnership based on our shared commitment to freedom and justice." This historical perspective underscores the long-standing nature of the relationship, built on mutual respect and shared ideals.

In his acceptance speech, Ambassador Fleitas expressed his profound gratitude for the strong support he received from the Taiwanese government and society throughout his term. He affirmed the foundational principles of the bilateral bond, stating, "The bond between Taiwan and Paraguay is based on shared democratic values."

He further emphasized the collaborative spirit that defines the relationship, noting, "Through mutual cooperation, both countries are working towards development and prosperity." Ambassador Fleitas also conveyed Paraguay's sincere appreciation for Taiwan's long-standing assistance in its national development endeavors. This acknowledgment highlights the tangible benefits of the diplomatic alliance, with Taiwan providing crucial support in areas such as agriculture and infrastructure development in Paraguay.

MOFA reiterated Paraguay's significance as a vital ally of Taiwan in South America, consistently providing staunch support for Taiwan's participation in the international community. This unwavering support is particularly noteworthy in the face of increasing diplomatic pressure from the People's Republic of China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory.

Paraguay stands as one of Taiwan's twelve remaining diplomatic allies worldwide and the only one in South America. Despite Beijing's persistent efforts to isolate Taiwan diplomatically, Paraguay has steadfastly maintained its official ties with Taipei. This unwavering commitment underscores the strength and resilience of the bilateral relationship.

The two nations have cultivated a robust cooperative relationship spanning various fields, including economic affairs, cultural exchange, and educational initiatives. Taiwan's significant contributions to Paraguay's agricultural sector and infrastructure development have been instrumental in the latter's progress. Conversely, Paraguay has played a crucial role in advocating for Taiwan's inclusion in international organizations and forums, amplifying Taiwan's voice on the global stage.

The recent years have witnessed a notable intensification of high-level engagements, with reciprocal visits by the heads of state further solidifying the already strong bonds between Taiwan and Paraguay. These interactions have not only reaffirmed the diplomatic alliance but have also paved the way for deeper collaboration on issues of mutual interest.

The conferral of the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon upon Ambassador Fleitas serves as a symbolic testament to the enduring friendship and fruitful cooperation that characterize the relationship between Taiwan and Paraguay. It underscores the deep appreciation within Taiwan for Paraguay's steadfast support and the dedicated efforts of individuals like Ambassador Fleitas in nurturing this crucial partnership. As Ambassador Fleitas concludes his mission, his contributions will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy, further strengthening the ties between these two democratic nations. The honor bestowed upon him is a fitting tribute to his commitment and a positive sign for the continued flourishing of Taiwan-Paraguay relations.
