
The automobile is undergoing a fundamental transformation, evolving from a traditional transportation tool into an immersive mobile entertainment platform and a fierce battleground for large-scale digital displays. As software-defined vehicles (SDVs) reshape the industry, major car manufacturers are aggressively integrating native streaming services, media platforms, and high-definition screens into their latest models to prepare for the upcoming autonomous driving era.
Pioneered by industry leaders like Tesla with its "Tesla Theater" introduced in 2019, automakers are increasingly embedding entertainment ecosystems directly into vehicle hardware. This trend has quickly expanded across both domestic and international brands. Hyundai Motor Company has integrated native YouTube functionality into its latest models, including the new Grandeur and the newly launched Avante, utilizing its next-generation infotainment platform, "Pleos Connect." Similarly, luxury brands like BMW, Volvo, and Polestar have long incorporated native YouTube and Disney+ streaming applications into their lineups.
Strategic partnerships between automakers and telecom giants are also accelerating this shift. Mercedes-Benz Korea collaborated with South Korean telecommunications leader LG Uplus to introduce "Live TV+", a dedicated in-vehicle streaming service integrated into the flagship new S-Class. Unlike traditional DMB technology, Live TV+ operates via stable wireless vehicle-to-everything communication networks, ensuring uninterrupted streaming even inside underground parking facilities or tunnels. Offering 28 free broadcast channels spanning news, sports, entertainment, and children's programming without requiring separate user authentication accounts, the system allows independent viewing across front and rear occupant screens, and also serves as a branded hub for ongoing manufacturer updates.
To support these advanced entertainment capabilities, in-vehicle displays are expanding dramatically in size and sophistication, rivaling or exceeding home living room setups and high-end tablet devices. For example, Samsung Display supplies advanced tandem OLED screens for upcoming luxury electric vehicles like Genesis' flagship GV90 SUV. The GV90 features an innovative expandable 24.6-inch central cinematic display that measures 23.6 inches during active driving, and rises vertically by 90 millimeters at the touch of a button when the vehicle is parked, delivering an ultra-wide cinematic viewing experience.
While current traffic regulations strictly limit video playback to parked or stationary vehicles due to safety considerations, the rapid evolution of autonomous driving technology promises a complete lifestyle shift. Industry experts project that commercialized Level 3 autonomous driving systems—where drivers are relieved from active steering and constant road observation—will become mainstream around 2030. Although advanced driver-assistance systems like Tesla's supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) currently operate at Level 2++ levels, major global automakers such as General Motors are actively developing Level 3 technologies for upcoming global releases. Once fully autonomous Level 3 and higher vehicles populate public roads, the concept of "driving while watching" will transition from a futuristic vision into an everyday reality, solidifying the automobile's new identity as a personalized digital theater.
