GIMPO, SOUTH KOREA – Building upon its commitment to expanding green infrastructure, Gimpo City in Gyeonggi Province has announced a significant undertaking to develop a picturesque 3-kilometer urban forest path along the Daebo Stream in Gochon Township. This initiative follows the city's ongoing efforts to establish an extensive 186-kilometer network of waterfront trails, further solidifying its dedication to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through accessible green spaces.
The ambitious Daebo Stream revitalization project aims to transform the existing waterway into a vibrant and usable recreational area, ultimately connecting it to the popular Gimpo Hyundai Premium Outlets. The city is actively pursuing national and provincial funding to realize this vision by 2027. The strategic connection of Daebo Stream with the Gimpo Ara Waterway (Gulpo Stream) is envisioned to create a substantial green corridor, seamlessly linking various urban areas and providing vital ecological and recreational pathways throughout the city.
Gimpo Mayor Kim Byung-soo has been a strong advocate for leveraging the city's inherent potential to boost its overall competitiveness. He emphasized, "Identifying and cultivating the latent strengths of Gimpo is the most direct way to elevate our city's standing." The Daebo Stream project aligns directly with this philosophy, prioritizing the enhancement of the daily lives of citizens through improved access to nature and outdoor recreation.
In addition to the Daebo Stream development, Gimpo City is also set to create a new roadside forest path in Gunhari, Wolgot Township, this year. This project is part of a broader strategy to utilize underutilized land, including parks, greenbelts, and roadside areas, to establish easily accessible neighborhood forests. The city's overarching goal is to significantly improve the well-being of its urban population by integrating nature into their everyday lives.
Under the Minseong 8th administration, Gimpo City has set an ambitious target of exceeding the national average for per capita neighborhood urban forest area. Recognizing the critical role of green spaces in mitigating the impacts of climate change and safeguarding public health, the city is actively investing in the creation of pocket parks, roadside forests, school forests, and the securing of green spaces along its waterways.
Mayor Kim Byung-soo highlighted the multifaceted benefits of well-maintained urban forests, stating, "Thoughtfully designed and managed urban forests not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of a city but also hold significant potential as tourism assets. By enriching our urban landscape with diverse colors and scenery, we aim to elevate Gimpo's brand value and inject vitality into what can often be a monotonous gray environment. We are committed to making urban forests another defining scenic resource for Gimpo City."
This comprehensive green initiative underscores Gimpo City's proactive approach to urban planning, prioritizing the creation of sustainable and livable communities by investing in accessible and interconnected green spaces for the benefit of its residents and the environment.
