GANGHWA COUNTY, SOUTH KOREA – In a landmark election, Ganghwa County Council in Incheon has witnessed the historic election of its first-ever female council member. The National Election Commission officially announced on April 3rd that Heo Yu-ri (35), representing the People Power Party, emerged victorious in the Ganghwa County Constituency A by-election, securing a decisive 42.78% of the vote, totaling 5,578 ballots.

The election saw a field of candidates vying for the vacant seat. Cha Seong-hoon (33) of the Democratic Party garnered 27.41% (3,587 votes), while independent candidates Koo Bon-ho (55) and Park Eul-ryang (59) received 18.58% (2,432 votes) and 11.21% (1,468 votes) respectively. Heo's victory marks a significant step towards greater gender representation in the local political landscape of Ganghwa County.

Born in Ganghwa-eup in 1989, the newly elected council member is a lifelong resident of the region, having completed her secondary education locally before pursuing a degree in piano at the prestigious Chugye University for the Arts. Prior to her successful foray into local politics, Heo actively contributed to the People Power Party, serving as the chairperson of the influential Women's Sharing Special Committee within the party's Incheon Metropolitan City chapter. This role likely provided her with valuable experience in community engagement and political organization.

During her campaign, Heo Yu-ri focused on addressing issues directly impacting the daily lives of Ganghwa County residents. Her key policy pledges included the expansion of meal support programs for senior citizen centers, a crucial initiative for the aging population of the region. Recognizing the growing importance of animal welfare, she also promised to establish a dedicated animal health center within the county. Furthermore, Heo committed to the preservation and enhancement of Ganghwa's rich local cultural heritage, a significant aspect of the region's identity. Her platform also included a pledge to improve the working conditions and treatment of education and childcare professionals, acknowledging their vital role in the community.

Upon her election victory, Heo Yu-ri expressed her deep sense of responsibility and her commitment to enacting meaningful change within Ganghwa County. "I am determined to bring a fresh perspective and a wind of positive change to Ganghwa County through diligent and responsible legislative activities," she stated, signaling her readiness to embark on her new role and address the needs of her constituents.

Heo's election is being widely celebrated by advocates for greater female representation in politics and by residents who are hopeful for a new era of inclusive governance in Ganghwa County. Her background as a local resident with a strong connection to the community, coupled with her political experience, positions her as a potentially influential voice in shaping the future of the region. The upcoming term of the Ganghwa County Council will be closely watched as Heo Yu-ri takes her seat and begins to implement her promised initiatives.
