HONGSEONG, CHUNGCHEONGNAM-DO – Chungcheongnam-do Province has reaffirmed its commitment to actively supporting the healthy and fulfilling later years of its senior citizens. This pledge was underscored by Governor Kim Tae-heum's participation in the '2025 1st Chungnam Federation President's Cup Senior Health Grand Festival,' held on the 16th of April at the Hongju Comprehensive Stadium in Hongseong County.
Addressing the assembled athletes and dignitaries, Governor Kim emphasized the growing significance of health in an aging society. "In this era of the 100-year lifespan, the ability to live healthily has become a paramount concern," he stated. "The provincial administration will ensure that there is no deficiency in the provision of support and resources to promote the well-being of our senior population."
In tangible efforts to realize this commitment, Chungnam Province is actively expanding its infrastructure for senior-friendly physical activities. Beyond the established Cheongyang Provincial Park Golf Course, the province is undertaking a concerted effort to establish an additional two to three park golf courses in each of its constituent cities and counties. Furthermore, the province is investing in the enhancement of community-based sports facilities, including the provision of exercise equipment in village halls, thereby fostering greater accessibility to physical activity at the grassroots level.
Beyond facilitating physical activity, the provincial government recognizes the intrinsic link between economic participation and overall well-being. In a landmark initiative, Chungnam Province has allocated a record 220 billion KRW this year to create over 53,000 employment opportunities specifically for senior citizens. This significant investment aims to empower seniors to maintain their health and vitality through meaningful engagement in the workforce.
Governor Kim expressed his unwavering faith in the capabilities and potential of the province's senior population, stating, "Centered around the Chungnam Senior Citizens Association, I am confident that Chungnam will evolve into a truly robust province where our senior citizens are empowered and strong. To ensure their active participation and engagement with the association, we will diligently consider and 반영 [reflect] the valuable insights and recommendations put forth by the Senior Citizens Association."
Extending his felicitations on the occasion of the inaugural festival, Governor Kim remarked, "I offer my sincere congratulations on the commencement of the 1st Chungnam Senior Health Grand Festival. I also extend a warm welcome to all the distinguished guests, including the dedicated athletes representing each city and county within our province. Drawing inspiration from the adage 'A smile makes you younger, anger makes you older,' I sincerely hope that this day will be filled with abundant laughter, rejuvenation, and enduring happiness for all participants."
The Senior Health Grand Festival, a significant initiative spearheaded by the Korea Senior Citizens Association Chungnam Federation and generously sponsored by the National Health Insurance Service Daejeon, Sejong, Chungcheong Regional Headquarters, serves as a vital platform for promoting the physical and social well-being of the province's senior citizens. By fostering active participation in sports, the event aims to enhance their health, facilitate meaningful social interaction, and cultivate a spirit of unity and camaraderie within the senior community.
The opening ceremony was a well-attended affair, drawing the participation of approximately 800 individuals, including Governor Kim Tae-heum, Hongseong County Mayor Lee Yong-rok, Kang Chun-sik (the esteemed President of the Korea Senior Citizens Association Chungnam Federation), heads of various city and county branches of the association, the participating athletes, and the dedicated officiating personnel. The formal proceedings commenced with the presentation of plaques of appreciation to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the well-being of seniors in the province. This was followed by the solemn return of the championship banner from the previous year's activities and the inspiring recitation of the athletes' oath, signifying their commitment to fair play and sportsmanship.
The heart of the festival lay in the spirited competitions across three popular senior sports: gateball, ground golf, and Han-gung (Korean traditional archery). A total of 94 teams, comprising 32 gateball teams, 30 ground golf teams, and 32 Han-gung teams, engaged in friendly yet competitive matches throughout the day. The stakes were particularly high for the gateball teams, as the ultimate victor of the tournament will earn the distinct honor of representing Chungcheongnam-do Province at the prestigious President's Cup National Gateball Tournament, scheduled to be held in Hongseong County in June. This national-level competition provides an opportunity for the province's top senior athletes to showcase their skills and compete against their peers from across the nation.
The inaugural Chungnam Senior Health Grand Festival stands as a testament to Chungcheongnam-do Province's proactive approach to addressing the needs and promoting the well-being of its aging population. By investing in infrastructure, creating employment opportunities, and fostering community engagement through events like this grand festival, the province is laying a solid foundation for its senior citizens to enjoy healthy, active, and fulfilling later years. The success of this inaugural event undoubtedly paves the way for future initiatives aimed at empowering and supporting the senior community in Chungcheongnam-do.
