South Korean Electronics Giants Sweep US Large-Capacity Washing Machine Market

Seoul, South Korea – LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics have once again solidified their dominance in the US premium appliance market, sweeping the top spots in Consumer Reports’ annual rankings for the best large-capacity washing machines.

Despite aggressive efforts by Chinese appliance manufacturers to penetrate the premium segment, they continue to face significant challenges in terms of technology and reliability, according to the report.

Of the nine top-rated large-capacity washing machines across front-loading, top-loading, and agitator categories, eight were manufactured by LG and one by Samsung.

LG’s Tromm washing machine claimed the top spot in the front-loading category, earning the highest overall score of 87 points out of 114 models evaluated. Consumer Reports praised the machine for its exceptional cleaning performance and top ratings in energy and water efficiency tests. LG was the only brand in the front-loading category to receive a perfect score in reliability.

LG’s premium Signature washing machine, which ranked second, was also highly commended for its sleek design and outstanding performance.

In the top-loading category, LG dominated the top three spots, with all three models earning the coveted “Green Choice” certification. Consumer Reports grants this certification to products that excel in water and energy efficiency, brand reliability, and overall cleaning performance.

While Chinese brands like Haier and Midea are making inroads into the North American market, they failed to secure a spot in Consumer Reports’ rankings. Midea, the only Chinese brand to be evaluated in the agitator category, received an overall score of 58 points. While it performed well in terms of fabric care and vibration, it received no points in brand reliability and consumer satisfaction.

General Electric (GE), which sold its appliance business to China’s Haier in 2016, also failed to make the list.

Consumer Reports’ rankings are considered highly influential in the US market as they are based on rigorous testing of products purchased directly from retail stores. The organization evaluates not only product performance but also brand reliability and consumer satisfaction.

“Choosing a reliable brand is the best way to ensure your appliance lasts,” said a Consumer Reports spokesperson. “This can save you money in the long run and reduce electronic waste.”

The enduring success of South Korean brands in the US market is attributed to their strong brand reputation and consumer trust. LG Electronics, for instance, has been ranked as the most reliable appliance brand for six consecutive years by Consumer Reports.

LG has been aggressively expanding its market share in the US with innovative products like the WashTower and WashCombo, which combine a washer and dryer into a single unit. The company was recently named a “best partner” by Lowe’s, one of the largest home improvement retailers in the US.

According to market research firm Tracline, Samsung and LG together held a 40% market share in the US home appliance market in 2023.

An industry insider noted, “The US is a vast country, and it can take a long time to get service for a broken appliance. As a result, consumers place a high value on reliability. The trust that South Korean brands have built over the years is difficult for competitors to replicate.”
