Argentina is set to mandate the use of electronic ear tags for cattle starting March 2025. This initiative aims to enhance transparency in the livestock industry, facilitate disease management, and improve traceability.

Key Points
- Mandatory Implementation: Electronic ear tags will be mandatory for all cattle from March 2025.
- International Tender: The government has conducted an international tender for the supply of electronic ear tags and readers, with six companies participating.
- World Bank Financing: The project will be funded by a World Bank loan of approximately $20 million.
- Nationwide Implementation: The country will be divided into 11 regions, each receiving the necessary equipment.
- Parallel Use of Existing Methods: Initially, a combination of visual inspection and electronic tagging will be used.

Expected Benefits
- Enhanced Transparency: Tracking cattle movement and enabling rapid response to disease outbreaks.
- Improved Food Safety: Identifying the source of diseases and preventing their spread.
- Increased Export Competitiveness: Meeting international sanitary standards to expand exports.
- Modernization of the Livestock Industry: Establishing a digital management system for the livestock industry.

Companies Participating in the Tender
Six companies participated in the tender, including Vesta SA, Carreteles Rafaela SA, Villanueva SA, ACA, Queclink Wireless Solutions Co.Ltd, Datamars, and Lecvet SRL. Datamars received particular attention for submitting the lowest bid.

Future Outlook
This initiative is expected to accelerate the digital transformation of Argentina's livestock industry and establish a safe and internationally compliant food production system. By enhancing transparency, the system is expected to bolster consumer confidence and improve export competitiveness.

Argentina's implementation of a cattle tracking system marks a significant step towards digitalizing the livestock industry. It is anticipated to foster the development of a more secure, transparent, and competitive livestock sector.
