GANGNEUNG—Night markets are lighting up the city of Gangneung, drawing large crowds of residents and tourists and bringing a fresh wave of vitality to the local economy. These markets have become new hotspots, solidifying their status as key components of the city's night tourism scene.

According to a city official, the Wolhwa Street Night Market, now in its third year, has seen over 103,400 visitors as of late July. This remarkable turnout has established it as a permanent fixture in Gangneung's old city center. A key feature of this year's market is the significant participation of local small business owners and young entrepreneurs, with 28 out of 47 stalls run by locals and 33 operated by young businesspeople. The city views the market as an important platform for boosting the local economy and creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs.

Following this success, the Jumun-jjin Starlight Sea Night Market, which opened in July, has also made a significant impact. With 6,300 visitors so far, it is contributing to the economic revitalization of the area. This market stands out by offering a wide array of distinctive local foods, particularly fresh seafood from Jumunjin. In a strategic move to enhance the visitor experience, its operating area was expanded to include the arcade as part of a cultural tourism market development project, adding more to see and enjoy.

With a mix of food, hands-on experience markets, lively performances, and interactive events, the interest from both residents and tourists is expected to continue growing. The Wolhwa Street Night Market will run until October 25, while the Jumun-jjin Starlight Sea Night Market will operate until September 6. Both markets are open every Friday and Saturday.

Mayor Kim Hong-gyu emphasized the significance of these initiatives. "At a time when many small businesses are facing challenges due to the economic downturn, it is incredibly meaningful that these night markets are becoming places of hope for economic recovery and youth startups," he stated.
