SIHEUNG, Gyeonggi Province – Siheung City announced on May 26 that its Carbon Neutrality Experience Center, set to become a hub for carbon-neutral education, will open its doors on June 5. This inauguration marks a significant step for Siheung as it aims to bolster its specialized environmental education initiatives and move towards becoming a truly sustainable environmental education city.
The Carbon Neutrality Experience Center is designed to be an engaging and comprehensive facility, comprising a Welcome Center, permanent exhibition halls, a children's play area, and outdoor experience zones.
The Welcome Center will offer visitors an introductory overview of the importance of carbon neutrality through engaging videos. The children’s play area is specifically tailored to stimulate environmental sensitivity in young children, featuring content such as puppet shows. Outdoors, visitors can explore facilities that promote hands-on experiences with eco-friendly vehicles and self-generation systems, offering a practical understanding of sustainable technologies.
Comprehensive Exhibitions for Eco-Conscious Citizens
A key highlight of the center is its permanent exhibition hall, which aims to cultivate eco-friendly citizens through a seamlessly integrated approach of education, experience, and practical application. The exhibitions are meticulously designed to provide accurate information on Siheung City's current carbon neutrality status, offer diverse hands-on activities linked to the displays, and encourage everyday actions that contribute to a carbon-neutral lifestyle.
To achieve these goals, the center has developed five new thematic exhibitions based on the Ministry of Environment's carbon-neutral lifestyle practices and Siheung City's key carbon neutrality initiatives. These themes include:
"Fundamentals of Carbon Neutrality": This section delves into the causes of climate change, explores various response measures, and highlights global efforts towards carbon neutrality. Visitors will learn about the interconnectedness of climate change and human activities, gaining a broader perspective on the global challenges and solutions.
"Energy": This exhibit introduces the concept of renewable energy and showcases Siheung City's own renewable energy projects. Interactive displays might explain how solar panels or wind turbines generate electricity, and how these technologies are being implemented locally.
"Mobility": This area emphasizes the necessity of transitioning to eco-friendly transportation systems and shares citizen participation policies. It could feature simulations of electric vehicles or public transport systems, encouraging visitors to consider sustainable commuting options.
"Resource Circulation": Visitors will learn about the recycling process of waste materials and can even create artworks using recycled Lego blocks. This hands-on activity reinforces the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling in daily life.
"Green Consumption": This space encourages visitors to reflect on their green consumption habits and record their commitments to sustainable purchasing. It aims to empower individuals to make conscious choices that support environmentally friendly products and services.
Each exhibition is designed with a focus on specific educational target groups, utilizing rich graphics and illustrations to ensure easy comprehension for all ages. Furthermore, the integration of digital and analog experiential content will allow visitors to experience carbon neutrality in a multi-faceted way. Beyond simple exhibition explanations, the center plans to offer linked activities such as experiments, discussions, and field trips, tailored to the age and purpose of the visitors.
Expanding Environmental Education Beyond the Walls
Siheung City is not stopping at in-house exhibitions. It is actively preparing extensive environmental education programs that extend beyond the center, aiming to foster learning and practical application through partnerships with schools, local communities, and businesses.
To reflect the region's unique ecological resources and characteristics, the city will develop school curricula tailored to different age groups. This includes operating "Visiting Early Childhood Environmental School" for preschoolers, "Carbon Neutrality Energy Expedition" for elementary students, and "Green School with Green Jobs" for middle school students, thereby strengthening age-specific environmental education. These programs will likely involve hands-on activities, outdoor explorations of local ecosystems like Siheung's wetlands and the Sihwa Lake, and partnerships with local environmental groups to provide practical learning opportunities.
Furthermore, Siheung plans to train local environmental instructors to expand social environmental education for all citizens. By leveraging diverse environmental education infrastructure within the community, the city will focus on creating Siheung-type Eco-Villages that enhance residents' carbon neutrality capabilities. This initiative could involve community-led projects like urban farming, waste segregation campaigns, and energy-saving initiatives within neighborhoods.
The city will also promote environmental education within the Siheung Smart Hub, aiming to raise carbon neutrality awareness among resident companies and their employees. This initiative will also include exploring incentives to encourage businesses to strengthen their carbon neutrality practices, potentially through workshops on sustainable business models, energy efficiency audits, and recognition programs for eco-friendly companies.
A Commitment to a Carbon-Free Future
Siheung City has long recognized the critical need for systematic ecological transition education and the widespread adoption of carbon-neutral practices in response to climate change. Consequently, the city has been dedicated to establishing an environmental education platform. This commitment was realized when the city was selected for the Ministry of Environment's "Carbon Neutrality Experience Center Improvement Project" last year, leading to the establishment of the Carbon Neutrality Experience Center within the Siheung Eco Center.
Mayor Lim Byeong-taek emphasized the center's significance, stating, "The Carbon Neutrality Experience Center is not just an exhibition space; it is a hub for Siheung-type carbon neutrality education that encourages thinking and acting for the planet." He added, "Siheung City, built on the miracle of Sihwa Lake's revitalization, will play a central role in responding to the global climate crisis. With the opening of this center, we will pursue comprehensive and efficient carbon neutrality policies and dedicate all our efforts to realizing a carbon-free future."
Siheung's commitment to environmental sustainability is deeply rooted in its history, particularly with the transformation of Sihwa Lake from a heavily polluted area into a thriving ecological hub. This success story serves as a powerful testament to the city's ability to overcome environmental challenges and provides a compelling backdrop for its ambitious carbon neutrality goals. The new center and its associated programs are expected to foster a stronger sense of environmental responsibility among Siheung's residents and set a benchmark for other cities in their journey towards sustainability.
