Life in an unfamiliar land can often be a continuous struggle, but with people who share the same vision and stand together, the path brightens with hope. The annual Vietnamese Community Football Tournament in Ulsan is precisely such a scene, overflowing with solidarity and hope. Steadily held since 2022, this tournament has firmly established itself as more than just a sports event; it's a precious gathering that offers a sense of home and warm community spirit to Vietnamese workers residing in Ulsan.

A Football Festival Unfolding in Blazing Heat

Every year, Ulsan Jung-gu's Taehwadong Simnidae Sports Park vibrates with the enthusiastic cheers and shouts of approximately 500 Vietnamese workers. This football tournament is hosted by the Ulsan Vietnam Football Community (Ulsan Vietnam Football Community), with teams formed by workers from various industrial sites within Ulsan. Primarily, workers in Ulsan's key industries such as shipbuilding, auto parts manufacturing, and chemical industries form the core, organizing teams by their respective workplaces or regions. The main matches, played by teams that have advanced through the group stages, truly create a crucible of fervent passion.

Though not professional athletes, their longing for their homeland and their fighting spirit for their teams create a performance comparable to professionals. Their quick footwork, accurate passes, and powerful shots are enough to elicit gasps from the spectators. The sweat and cheers of the players chasing the ball, and the sight of workers holding flags and cheering for their teams, resemble a grand festival. During this time, they forget the weariness of daily life and immerse themselves completely in the joy of football and community. In particular, singing cheering songs to Vietnamese traditional music or enthusiastically waving their national flags clearly demonstrates that this tournament is a venue for cultural exchange beyond mere sports.

A Community Gathering that Soothes Loneliness and Strengthens Solidarity

Participants in the tournament unanimously stated that this football tournament was a valuable time to encourage and cooperate with each other, and to share their longing for their homeland. Especially since large-scale offline gatherings among workers decreased after the COVID-19 pandemic, this event takes on greater significance, going beyond a simple sports tournament to promote emotional exchange and community recovery.

One participant remarked, "It's rare to have time like this in Korea, where I can gather with people from my hometown to play and cheer." They added, "Today was truly empowering and happy." Another participant added, "Playing the game relieved stress, and it was great to talk and laugh with my Vietnamese friends for a long time." As such, the Vietnamese Community Football Tournament plays a crucial role in alleviating the loneliness of life abroad and providing comfort and strength to one another. This tournament significantly contributes to resolving the cultural isolation Vietnamese workers may experience and providing the psychological stability needed to adapt to a new environment.

Ulsan City's Continuous Support: The Foundation for a Successful Tournament

The successful annual hosting of such a meaningful event owes much to the full support of the Ulsan Metropolitan City Foreign Residents Support Center. The center provides practical assistance in various aspects, including venue rental, deployment of safety personnel, and preparation of trophies and supplies, for which the workers express deep gratitude.

Sohn Jung-im, a counselor at the Ulsan Foreign Residents Support Center, emphasized, "The Vietnamese Community Football Tournament is a festival where sweat and laughter, cheers and solidarity blend. It's a meaningful time that allows those living far from home in a foreign land to feel the warmth of their homeland and the comfort of community, if only for a moment." The center's foreign resident community support project offers opportunities for rejuvenation in monotonous daily life and becomes a source of vitality that encourages and empowers those exhausted by life abroad. This continuous interest and support are crucial foundations for the activities of the Vietnamese worker community. The center plans to continue supporting various foreign resident communities and strive to promote mutual understanding and cultural exchange.

The Vietnamese Community Football Tournament is an exemplary case of sustainable community activity and a symbolic event that showcases the bright future of Korea's multicultural society, and it will be remembered for a long time. It is hoped that the Vietnamese Community Football Tournament, which will be successfully held this summer, will be a meaningful time that adds vitality and warm solidarity to the Vietnamese worker community in Ulsan.
