CHEONAN-ASAN, South Korea – Chungnam Province has announced plans for the ambitious construction of a large-scale, multi-purpose dome stadium in the Cheonan-Asan area, positioning the region as a major hub for K-Pop and professional baseball in South Korea. The initiative, unveiled by Chungnam Governor Kim Tae-heum on November 18, aims to transform Cheonan-Asan into a "Cultural City with a population of 1.5 million" by establishing a future-oriented complex cultural and sports space.
The proposed dome is planned for a 200,000 square meter site, conveniently located within a 10 to 20-minute walk from the KTX Cheonan-Asan Station, leveraging its superior accessibility. The province intends to allocate a total project cost of 1 trillion KRW (approximately $770 million USD) by 2031.
Governor Kim emphasized that the Cheonan-Asan Dome Stadium will function as an all-weather, 365-day cultural space, protected from rain, snow, heatwaves, and cold snaps. He envisions it as a "Complex Leisure Platform for all of Korea," capable of hosting diverse events, including sports competitions, concerts, exhibitions, and festivals, owing to its strategic KTX access.
The 50,000-plus seat venue is designed to serve as a major venue for both sports and entertainment. The provincial government plans to coordinate with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) to host at least 30 professional baseball games annually. Furthermore, the stadium is projected to host K-Pop concerts for an extensive period—between 150 and 200 days per year. To achieve this, Chungnam is pursuing collaborations with major entertainment companies such as HYBE, SM, and JYP to potentially co-brand the facility.
In addition to the stadium itself, the project includes plans for supplementary developments aimed at local economic revitalization. Surrounding the dome, the province will integrate a hotel, shopping center, and cultural facilities, connecting them with a massive public transit transfer center. These associated businesses are expected to stimulate the local commercial sector, expand the tourism industry, and create youth employment opportunities.
"We will accelerate the project by launching land selection and feasibility study services next month," stated Governor Kim. He committed to minimizing the burden on local residents by exploring diverse funding sources, including securing national government funding and attracting private investment. The governor also promised a transparent process involving expert consultation and public discourse.
This initiative is set to significantly upgrade South Korea's venue infrastructure. Currently, the only functional dome stadium in the country is the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, which has a capacity of 16,000 seats. By comparison, the new Cheonan-Asan Dome would be one of the largest and most modern complexes in the country, aiming to become the epicenter of K-Pop and Korean culture globally, and a new economic and cultural hub for the nation.
