UAE-Syria Resume Civilian Flights: A Signal of Improving Relations

Dubai – Civilian flights between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Syria have resumed after approximately one year, marking a significant signal of improving relations between the two countries. Flydubai, a low-cost airline from the UAE, successfully landed its first flight at Damascus International Airport on June 1, 2025 (local time), signaling the beginning of regular direct flights between the two nations.

Background and Purpose of Resumed Operations

The resumption of civilian flights follows a plan announced by the UAE Federal Civil Aviation Authority on April 14, 2025. According to Syria's state news agency SANA, Syrian civil aviation and air transport authorities stated that the purpose of this resumption is to strengthen relations between the two countries and enhance regional connectivity. This is interpreted as part of a gradual trend of recovery in relations between Arab countries and Syria, which had been severed since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.

In the early stages of the Syrian civil war, the UAE took a firm stance against the Syrian government, closing its embassy and straining diplomatic ties. However, in December 2018, the UAE reopened its embassy in Damascus, showing signs of improving relations. Subsequently, other Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, also sought to normalize relations with Syria, and in May 2023, Syria rejoined the Arab League, making the restoration of relations more tangible.

Economic and Diplomatic Implications

The resumption of Flydubai's Damascus route carries significance beyond mere flight operations. Economically, it is expected to contribute to boosting trade and investment between the two countries. Increased flights can facilitate business exchanges and attract more tourists, offering a small but positive contribution to Syria's post-war reconstruction efforts. Furthermore, it can positively impact the efficiency of transporting humanitarian aid.

Diplomatically, it can be interpreted as the UAE indirectly expressing its willingness to support Syria's reconstruction. This will be an important step for Syria to emerge from international isolation and gradually restore normal diplomatic relations. It can also send a positive signal to other Arab countries regarding improving ties with Syria.

Syria's Efforts to Break Isolation

Syria has been suffering from severe economic hardship and a humanitarian crisis due to a prolonged civil war and international sanctions. In this situation, restoring relations with neighboring Arab countries is a crucial survival strategy for Syria. Particularly after the 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquake, as humanitarian aid from Arab countries flowed in, Syria found a stepping stone to break its isolation. The resumption of civilian flights is one of the fruits of Syria's efforts to reintegrate into the international community.

The resumption of regular flights by Flydubai is a significant starting point for improving relations between the UAE and Syria. It is anticipated that exchanges in various fields, including politics, economy, and culture, will become more active between the two countries in the future. Moreover, this case is expected to positively influence the normalization of relations between Syria and other Arab nations, contributing to stability in the Middle East.

However, Syria's post-war reconstruction still requires vast resources and time, and sustained attention and support from the international community are essential. It is hoped that this resumption of flights will bring tangible positive changes to the lives of the Syrian people and contribute to Syria's stability and prosperity.
