Artist Lim Sun-i Captures the City's Traces in Solo Exhibition

SEJONG CITY, South Korea—Sejong Special Self-Governing City (Mayor Choi Min-ho) announced the opening of "Sosori, Soreureu, Haekkeot," a solo exhibition by resident artist Lim Sun-i, running from November 7th to the 18th at the Yeon-dong Cultural Power Plant, located in Yeon-dong.

This exhibition marks the fifth installment in a series featuring the first-term resident artists at the facility. It is the culmination of Lim Sun-i’s work developed during her residency, documenting the time and traces of the city encountered while walking the streets of the old downtown areas, specifically the districts of Jochiwon-eup, Yeon-dong, and Bugang-myeon.

The artist’s unique approach involves scrutinizing the inherent qualities of the city—focusing on old buildings, weathered signboards, and the layers of time that have accumulated upon them. Lim treats architecture and language as subjects for deep contemplation and philosophical inquiry.

The exhibition title is composed of three pure Korean words: ‘Sosori,’ ‘Soreureu,’ and ‘Haekkeot.’ These words are chosen for their symbolic meanings: ‘Sosori’ represents the height of one’s gaze, ‘Soreureu’ denotes the sensation of change and flow, and ‘Haekkeot’ signifies a long-held or deeply felt duration of time. Through the lens of this native language, the artist aims to share the sensory experience of traversing the original city center with the audience.

Lim Sun-i is an established artist with a prolific career, having held several solo exhibitions, including ‘Transcendent Time’ (2023) and ‘The Weight of the Wind - #2 Where it Scattered and Arrived’ (2022), alongside numerous group exhibitions. Her distinct artistic vision and excellence have been recognized with prestigious accolades, including the 20th Umin Art Award (2021) and the 6th Goam Art Award (2022).

The exhibition is free of charge and open to the public daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please note that the gallery will be closed on Mondays, Sundays, and public holidays.

The ongoing exhibition series at the Yeon-dong Cultural Power Plant began in July with Kim Yoon-seop, and has since featured four other resident artists: Kim Kyung-jin, Choi Seung-cheol, Jung Won, and now Lim Sun-i. The cultural center is also planning a special exhibition focusing on the Korean alphabet, Hangeul, toward the end of the year.
