Cheonan City Launches 'Seed of Hope for Life' Campaign to Raise Awareness on Organ Donation

Cheonan City announced on September 14 that it is running the 'Seed of Hope for Life' campaign from September 14 to 20 to promote correct public awareness regarding organ and human tissue donation in observance of the 9th Organ Donation Week.

Organ Donation Week is officially designated under Article 6-2 of the Act on Organ Transplantation, covering the week starting from the second Monday of September every year. The designated period aims to honor the noble self-sacrifice of organ and human tissue donors while spreading the profound value of sharing life throughout society.

Participating in the 'Seed of Hope for Life' campaign for the third consecutive year, Cheonan City plans to utilize multiple communication channels—including the Cheonan Love newsletter, the official municipal website, and electronic public display boards—to guide residents on how to register their intent to become organ donors.

Lee Hyun-ki, head of the Seobuk District Public Health Center, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating that sharing life goes beyond saving a single individual to rescue other precious lives. He expressed his hope that through this campaign, local residents will broaden their understanding of organ and human tissue donation and actively participate in this noble cause.

Prior to this week-long campaign, both the Seobuk and Dongnam District Public Health centers in Cheonan operated an organ and human tissue donation promotion booth at the Cheonan K-Culture Expo held from September 2 to 6. Through engaging activities such as OX quizzes, health officials successfully cleared up public misunderstandings and myths regarding organ donation while urging citizens to join the movement for a widespread culture of life-sharing.

To better understand why this initiative matters, it is helpful to look at the broader context of organ donation in South Korea. According to data from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KDCA) and the Korean Network for Organ Sharing (KONOS), South Korea continues to face a significant gap between the number of patients waiting for organ transplants and the actual number of available donors. While medical advancements have vastly improved transplant success rates, the nation heavily relies on imported tissues or faces long waiting lists, largely due to traditional cultural views surrounding bodily integrity after death and a historical lack of public awareness.

Nationwide campaigns like Cheonan City's 'Seed of Hope for Life' play a vital role in addressing these challenges by normalizing conversations around organ donation. In South Korea, individuals can legally register their pledge to donate organs through authorized public health centers, government websites, or designated agencies. When a registered donor passes away, family consent is still a crucial step in the actual retrieval process, making public education campaigns essential not only for individual registration but also for fostering family-wide discussions and consensus.

By bringing promotional efforts directly to major local events like the K-Culture Expo and leveraging digital communication channels, Cheonan City is adopting a proactive, community-centered approach to public health. These continuous municipal efforts are expected to gradually shift public perceptions, dispel lingering social stigmas, and ultimately save more lives by encouraging active community participation in the national organ donor registry.
