SOUTH CHUNGCHEONG PROVINCE — South Chungcheong Province has achieved a historic demographic milestone, with its population climbing past 2.14 million for the first time since Daejeon became a separate metropolitan city over three decades ago in 1989.
According to regional administrative data released at the close of last month, the local resident count reached 2,140,278. This reflects a steady upward trend, adding 720 residents from the previous month and marking a net gain of 3,525 individuals since the beginning of the year.
While the province continues to face a demographic drag typical of many regional areas—where mortality rates outpace birth rates—the population deficit has been more than offset by positive net migration. Local authorities attribute this inward migration to a thriving regional economy, bolstered by robust activity in the semiconductor sector and successful corporate investment initiatives that continue to draw newcomers from surrounding administrative districts.
