Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Services Enterprise (ESLSE) is set to bolster its operations with the procurement of nearly 14,600 shipping containers. The state-owned shipping company has received bids from 11 international suppliers for this significant expansion.
The acquisition of 13,000 20-foot containers and 1,600 40-foot containers aims to enhance ESLSE's capacity to handle the growing volume of cargo, particularly imports through the Port of Djibouti. The company currently handles about 45% of Ethiopia's maritime trade.
While ESLSE is optimistic about its expansion plans, it continues to grapple with significant financial challenges. The company is owed billions of birr by the state-owned Ethio Engineering Group (EEG) for past services, including shipping costs and container rentals.
The Ethiopian government is working to resolve this issue, but the delay in payments has impacted ESLSE's ability to invest in its fleet and operations.
Despite these challenges, ESLSE remains committed to its mission of providing efficient and reliable shipping services to Ethiopia and the region. The company's expansion plans, coupled with ongoing efforts to improve its financial position, are expected to strengthen its position as a key player in the global shipping industry.
