Singapore Strait Sees Alarming Spike in Ship Robberies, ReCAAP ISC Issues Urgent Alert

Singapore – The maritime community is on high alert following a sharp increase in armed robbery incidents targeting vessels transiting the Singapore Strait. The Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia Information Sharing Centre (ReCAAP ISC) has issued a strong warning, citing a series of recent attacks and cautioning of potential further occurrences.

In a concerning three-day span from March 28 to 30, 2025, ReCAAP ISC reported six separate incidents of armed robbery against ships navigating the Phillip Channel and the eastbound lane of the Singapore Strait's Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS). The incidents were clustered, with three occurring within a tight timeframe between 01:25 and 02:55 hours on March 30. Two other incidents took place on March 29 between 04:08 and 05:15 hours, and one was reported on March 28 at 06:30 hours.

The targeted vessels were diverse, including three container ships, two bulk carriers, and one oil tanker. Investigations revealed that a portable welding machine was stolen from one vessel, and engine parts were missing from another. Fortunately, no injuries to the crew were reported in any of the six incidents, and no theft occurred in the remaining four cases.

This recent surge brings the total number of armed robbery incidents in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS) since the beginning of 2025 to a concerning 35. Alarmingly, all these incidents have occurred within the Singapore Strait. This represents a dramatic increase compared to the same period in 2024, which saw only 11 reported incidents. ReCAAP ISC has indicated that the precise locations of these incidents are detailed on an accompanying map.

In response to this worrying trend, ReCAAP ISC has issued a strong call to action for littoral States. They are urging these nations to intensify their patrol and surveillance efforts within their territorial waters. Furthermore, ReCAAP ISC emphasizes the need for swift responses to incident reports from ships and a strengthening of information sharing and collaborative efforts to ensure the apprehension of the perpetrators.

For vessels currently navigating or planning to transit the Singapore Strait, ReCAAP ISC has issued critical precautionary recommendations:

Heightened Vigilance: Vessels are advised to significantly enhance their lookouts, particularly during nighttime and when navigating through identified high-risk areas.
Adherence to Best Practices: Strict compliance with the preventive measures outlined in the "Regional Guide 2 to Counter Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia" is strongly recommended.

Immediate Reporting: Any incident, regardless of its perceived severity, should be reported immediately to the nearest coastal State and the vessel's Flag State using the ReCAAP ISC mobile application.
Vessel Identification: In the event of a suspicious encounter, crews are encouraged to consult the ReCAAP ISC's "Guidebook on Identification of Fishing Vessels in Asia" to aid in the identification of potential perpetrator vessels.
The significant increase in incidents underscores the urgent need for maritime stakeholders to heed the warnings issued by ReCAAP ISC. Enhanced vigilance and the diligent implementation of recommended security measures are crucial to ensuring the safety of navigation in this vital waterway.
