Cheonan, South Korea – In a move to refresh its public image and celebrate a significant milestone, Cheonan City has announced a redesign of its highly successful local currency card, the 'Cheonan Sarang Card' (천안사랑카드). Launched in April 2020, the card is commemorating its fifth anniversary, prompting the city to engage its residents in the selection of a new aesthetic.

The Cheonan Sarang Card is part of a broader nationwide trend in South Korea where local governments have introduced their own digital or card-based currencies to stimulate regional economies and support small businesses. These initiatives aim to encourage local spending by offering users benefits such as discounts or cashback, while simultaneously fostering a stronger sense of community and economic self-reliance within the region.

To ensure the new design resonates with its user base and effectively promotes the city's identity, Cheonan is leveraging its public opinion platform, 'Dasi Cheonan' (다시 천안), to conduct a design survey. Running until May 9th, the survey presents residents with six distinct design proposals, each thoughtfully crafted to represent various facets of Cheonan's heritage and contemporary appeal.

The proposed designs showcase a blend of modern and traditional elements. Several options feature creative English lettering incorporating the city's name, aiming for a unique and sophisticated visual identity. Others draw inspiration from Cheonan's iconic landmarks and cultural symbols. These include Cheonan Samgeori Park (천안삼거리공원), a historically significant site known for its scenic beauty and folklore; the Independence Hall of Korea (독립기념관), a poignant reminder of the nation's struggle for independence; and Yu Gwan-sun (유관순 열사), a revered young independence activist whose bravery is deeply ingrained in Korean history.

Furthermore, the designs pay homage to Cheonan's culinary heritage with depictions of Hodugwaja (호두과자), the city's famous walnut cookies, a beloved local delicacy and popular souvenir. In a bid to connect with a younger audience and project a friendlier image, one design incorporates Cheonan Friends (천안프렌즈), the city's official mascots.

The survey allows participants to cast two votes, selecting one preferred design from each of the two distinct stylistic categories. The two designs that garner the highest number of votes will be officially adopted as the new look for the Cheonan Sarang Card. Residents can easily participate through multiple channels, including the dedicated Cheonan Sarang Card mobile application, the Cheonan City Hall's official website, and the city's social media presence, particularly its blog.

The city government anticipates launching the redesigned Cheonan Sarang Card by July of this year. This initiative reflects Cheonan's commitment to continuously improve and revitalize the program, ensuring its continued relevance and appeal to both citizens and local merchants.

A representative from Cheonan City expressed enthusiasm about the redesign, stating, "The Cheonan Sarang Card, since its launch in April 2020, has played a vital role in supporting our local economy. As we celebrate its 5th anniversary, we are excited to unveil a fresh design that we hope will bring renewed joy to our residents and the small business owners who are the backbone of our community. We are confident that the Cheonan Sarang Card will continue to grow and contribute significantly to our city's prosperity, and we encourage everyone to show their continued support."

The success of local currency initiatives like the Cheonan Sarang Card across South Korea highlights a growing trend towards community-focused economic strategies. These cards not only provide financial benefits to users and boost local businesses but also foster a sense of civic pride and encourage residents to invest in their own neighborhoods. The redesign of the Cheonan Sarang Card is a testament to the city's proactive approach in keeping this vital program dynamic and engaging for its citizens. As Cheonan embarks on this visual refresh, the anticipation is high for a new look that embodies the city's spirit and strengthens the bond between its residents and local economy.
