Celebrity Chef Yoon Nam-no Reveals Past Bullying Experience in Australia

Renowned chef Yoon Nam-no recently shared a deeply personal and painful experience of being bullied while working in Australia during his early career. His confession aired on the MBC entertainment program 'Omniscient Interfering View' on the 12th, where he appeared alongside creator Eet-seob.

The segment featured Yoon Nam-no preparing seaweed soup for an employee's birthday, a gesture of warmth and camaraderie. During the celebration, an employee mentioned their upcoming departure for Australia in June, prompting Yoon Nam-no to offer sincere congratulations for their future endeavors.

Reflecting on his own time in Australia, Yoon Nam-no recounted the difficult circumstances he faced upon arrival. "I went to Australia with only 300,000 won (approximately $220 USD). My first job was on a lettuce farm. After earning money for a month, I moved to Sydney. I visited countless restaurants, desperately seeking employment, even just to wash dishes. However, none of them would hire me," he revealed.

Yoon Nam-no then disclosed the shocking and distressing experiences he endured after finally securing a position at a well-known restaurant. "In the end, I got a job at a pretty famous restaurant. I went through a lot of tough times. I still get emotional thinking about it. People would poke me from the side, constantly teasing me. I had to handle the knife with precision while always looking over my shoulder. They would even hit me from behind, causing me to accidentally stab my own hand with my knife," he confessed, his voice filled with lingering emotion.

Despite the severity of the abuse, Yoon Nam-no explained the psychological pressure he faced at the time. "If I ever said anything, they would simply deny it, claiming it didn't happen. I cried every single day underneath the restaurant. At that time, I felt the most important thing was that escaping that situation would be even more shameful." This statement highlights the immense emotional burden he carried and the societal pressures that often prevent victims from speaking out or seeking help.

Yoon Nam-no's willingness to share his past trauma serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence and impact of workplace bullying, even in international settings. His story, while painful, also carries a message of resilience and the importance of supporting those who may be facing similar hardships. His heartfelt encouragement to his employee embarking on a new chapter in Australia suggests a desire to ensure others have a more positive experience than he did.

While the program did not delve into the specifics of the restaurant or the duration of Yoon Nam-no's employment there, his candid account has resonated with viewers, sparking discussions about workplace culture and the need for greater awareness and prevention of bullying. His vulnerability in sharing such a difficult period of his life is being lauded by many as courageous and potentially helpful for others who have experienced similar abuse.

This revelation adds another layer to the public persona of the beloved chef, known for his culinary talent and warm personality. It underscores the fact that success and public recognition can often mask past struggles and silent battles. Yoon Nam-no's story serves as a powerful testament to the enduring impact of bullying and the strength it takes to overcome such adversity.
