Paraguay: 6 Departments Under Rain, Storm, and Hail Alert

ASUNCIÓN – The Paraguayan Directorate of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) today issued a weather alert for six departments across eastern and central Paraguay, anticipating severe weather conditions including heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong gusts of wind, and hail. Active thunderstorm nuclei are persistently affecting several regions, making it impossible to rule out the possibility of localized, very severe weather phenomena.

Alerted Regions and Expected Weather Conditions

The main areas affected by this alert are as follows:

Central Guairá Department: Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected, along with localized strong winds and hail. This region is particularly active in agriculture, and crop damage is a concern.
Western Caaguazú Department: Similar to Guairá, heavy precipitation and strong gusts are anticipated. Drivers should exercise caution due to potentially reduced visibility.
Eastern and Southern Caazapá Department: With extensive forest areas, there is an increased risk of landslides. Preparations for rising river levels are necessary.
Southern Itapúa Department: Bordering Argentina, this region could see impacts on its agricultural and tourism industries. Visitors to attractions like the Maruní Falls should monitor weather conditions closely.
Northern Alto Paraná Department: Close to Ciudad del Este, one of Paraguay's economic hubs, this area could experience urban disruption and traffic chaos.
Central and Southern Canindeyú Department: Agriculture is the primary industry here, with potential damage to soybean and corn fields.
These regions can expect moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, localized moderate to strong gusts, and intermittent hail. Strong winds, in particular, could cause safety hazards due to falling branches or structural damage, requiring extreme caution.

Cause of Adverse Weather and Future Outlook

According to the Paraguayan Meteorological Directorate, this adverse weather is attributed to the influx of a humid and unstable air mass moving across the South American continent, coupled with the influence of a low-pressure system. The ascent of warm, humid air in an unstable atmospheric layer is forming powerful thunderclouds, which are causing localized heavy downpours, strong winds, and hail.

The DMH's long-term forecast indicates that rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected to be confined to northern Paraguay by early Sunday (June 29) and gradually improve as the day progresses. However, the possibility of localized heavy rainfall remains, so vigilance should be maintained.

By early Monday (June 30), moderate southerly winds are expected, leading to a chilly morning. This is interpreted as the result of the low-pressure system moving gradually southward, bringing in colder air. Consequently, morning temperatures could drop significantly, so residents should pay special attention to maintaining body warmth and wear warm clothing when going outdoors.

Recommendations for Residents

The Meteorological Directorate strongly advises residents to adhere to the following safety guidelines in preparation for this adverse weather:

Avoid unnecessary outings: Refrain from non-essential travel, especially during thunderstorms. If outdoors when a thunderstorm occurs, cease activities and seek safe indoor shelter.
Exercise caution while driving: Drive slowly in anticipation of reduced visibility due to heavy rain and slippery roads. Detour around roads at risk of flooding.
Beware of lightning and electrocution: During lightning, avoid standing under large trees or near utility poles outdoors. Indoors, stay away from windows and doors. It's also advisable to unplug home appliances.
Check rivers and drainage systems: Inspect drainage systems around homes to ensure water flows smoothly. Residents near rivers should closely monitor water level changes.
Prepare emergency supplies: Have flashlights, emergency food, and water ready in case of power outages or communication disruptions.
Stay updated on weather information: Regularly check updated weather information through the official website or social media of the Paraguayan Directorate of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) and local media, and act accordingly.
This adverse weather could cause damage in some areas of Paraguay, so it is crucial for residents in affected regions to remain vigilant and prepared. Government authorities and disaster management agencies are also on high alert and will promptly respond to and support recovery efforts if damage occurs.
