Project at Cheonan Jeil High School to Integrate Ecological Park, Sports, and Cultural Amenities for Students and Residents

Cheonan, South Korea – The city of Cheonan has announced the official commencement of the ‘Cheonan Jeil High School Complex Facility’ project, a significant undertaking poised to redefine the relationship between educational institutions and the local community. Following the successful clearance of a joint local government investment review by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the ambitious project is now moving full steam ahead, with a target completion date of July 2028.

The initiative, a collaborative effort between the Cheonan City government and the Cheonan Office of Education, aims to construct a multifaceted complex on the grounds of Cheonan Jeil High School. This innovative facility will encompass a substantial 13,045 square meter ecological park, fostering environmental awareness and providing a green oasis for both students and the wider public. Complementing the natural space will be a state-of-the-art, three-story (one basement, two above ground – corrected based on typical Korean building descriptions) sports-cultural complex center spanning 6,417 square meters. This center is slated to house an indoor gymnasium, catering to various athletic activities and school events, and a small performance hall, offering a venue for cultural performances, lectures, and community gatherings.

The total investment in this transformative project amounts to 48.9 billion Korean Won (approximately $36 million USD based on current exchange rates). A significant portion of this funding, 12.118 billion Won, was secured through a competitive national contest for school complex facilities sponsored by the Ministry of Education, highlighting the project's alignment with national educational and community development goals.

The concept of school complex facilities has been gaining traction in South Korea as a way to maximize the utilization of school grounds and create hubs that serve the broader community beyond traditional educational purposes. These facilities often integrate public amenities such as libraries, sports centers, cultural venues, and parks, promoting lifelong learning, health and well-being, and community engagement. By co-locating these resources on school campuses, the government aims to enhance accessibility for residents, optimize public spending, and foster stronger ties between schools and their surrounding neighborhoods.

Lee Byung-do, the Superintendent of the Cheonan Office of Education, expressed his enthusiasm for the project's progress, stating, “Passing the joint investment review is a crucial step forward. We are committed to working closely with the city to develop a complex that will truly benefit both our students and the citizens of Cheonan.”

Echoing this sentiment, Kim Seok-pil, the Acting Mayor and Vice Mayor of Cheonan, emphasized the project's significance for urban regeneration and community well-being. “This project will create a much-needed healing park and a modern sports-cultural complex in the heart of the original downtown area. We envision it as a space where citizens can relax, engage in lifelong learning through cultural and sports activities, and where students can enhance their physical fitness and learn about the natural environment. We hope this will serve as a successful model for school-community integration.”

The Cheonan Jeil High School Complex Facility is part of a broader national trend in South Korea to develop innovative school infrastructure that serves as a community anchor. These projects are designed to address various societal needs, including a lack of public recreational spaces, the promotion of intergenerational interaction, and the creation of vibrant community hubs. The integration of an ecological park in the Cheonan project underscores a growing emphasis on environmental sustainability and the provision of green spaces within urban environments.

The successful passage of the joint investment review signifies that the project has met rigorous standards of feasibility and public benefit. This milestone paves the way for the next phases of development, including detailed design, contractor selection, and ultimately, construction. The anticipated completion in July 2028 marks a significant step towards enhancing the educational environment for students at Cheonan Jeil High School and providing valuable recreational, cultural, and green spaces for the entire Cheonan community. As the project progresses, it will undoubtedly serve as a benchmark for future school-community complex initiatives across South Korea.
