Nestled on the western coast of South Korea, Hongseong County in Chungcheongnam-do province is strategically leveraging its picturesque landscapes and burgeoning reputation as a filming location to achieve its ambitious tourism goals. Declared the "2025 Visit Hongseong Year," the county aims to attract two million visitors, capitalizing on the exposure gained through popular films and dramas that have chosen its locales as their captivating backdrops.

The Chungnam Information & Culture Industry Promotion Agency has played a pivotal role in this transformation, actively supporting video content production and fostering an environment conducive to filmmaking. This initiative has not only brought the magic of cinema and television to Hongseong but has also inadvertently spotlighted the region's natural beauty and unique charm to a national and even international audience.

Recent successes on the silver and small screens have significantly boosted Hongseong's profile. The nostalgic romance film "You Are the Apple of My Eye," a remake of the Taiwanese hit, prominently featured Hongseong Girls' High School and Hongseong High School, immersing viewers in the local atmosphere. The film's connection to the region was further cemented by a special screening held in Hongseong itself, fostering a sense of local pride and drawing attention to the county.

Furthermore, Coupang Play's critically acclaimed and commercially successful series "Boyhood," a coming-of-age drama set in the Chungcheong region, also utilized Hongseong Girls' High School as a key filming location. The drama's popularity has not only entertained audiences but has also cast a positive light on the unique dialect and cultural nuances of the Chungcheong provinces, implicitly promoting the region's appeal. Beyond the screen, the production itself injected approximately 38 million KRW into the local economy through expenditures on accommodation, catering, and local services, demonstrating the tangible economic benefits of attracting filming projects.

The cinematic landscape of Hongseong extends beyond high school settings. The thought-provoking film "Ordinary Family" captured scenes along the modern roads of Naepo New Town, showcasing the county's evolving urban landscape. Retrospective glances reveal that Hongseong has been a favored location for some time, with the popular movie "Start-Up" bringing the vibrant energy of Hongseong Myeongdong Market to the forefront and the nostalgic teen romance "Hot Young Bloods" utilizing the scenic Sokdong Tidal Flat Village and the traditional charm of Gwangcheon Market as integral parts of its narrative. Even historical dramas have found their place in Hongseong, with the beloved "Moonlight Drawn by Clouds" filming at the historic Gyeolsongdongheon, a testament to the county's rich cultural heritage.

The strategic attraction of filming projects offers a multifaceted approach to regional development. Beyond the immediate economic benefits derived from production crews residing and spending locally, the long-term impact on tourism is substantial. Once films and dramas are released and gain popularity, the featured locations often become pilgrimage sites for fans, eager to experience the settings of their favorite stories firsthand. This "film tourism" phenomenon can lead to a sustained influx of visitors, boosting local businesses, creating employment opportunities, and enhancing the overall vibrancy of the region.

Recognizing this potent synergy between media and tourism, Hongseong County officially declared the "2025 Visit Hongseong Year" on February 7th, signaling a proactive and concerted effort to capitalize on its growing appeal. The ambitious target of attracting two million tourists annually underscores the county's commitment to establishing itself as a premier tourism destination on South Korea's West Coast. To achieve this, Hongseong is implementing a range of initiatives, including developing tourism infrastructure, promoting local attractions, and actively courting further filming projects.

The county boasts a diverse array of attractions that extend beyond its filming locations. These include the historic Hongju Fortress, a testament to the region's rich past; the serene Manhae Birthplace, commemorating the influential Buddhist monk and independence activist Han Yong-un; and the picturesque Baegam Mountain, offering stunning natural vistas. The culinary scene in Hongseong is also noteworthy, particularly its renowned Namdang Port, famous for its delicious seafood. Furthermore, the Gwangcheon Eupseong Fortress and the nearby Gwangcheon Cave offer glimpses into the region's historical and geological significance.

Director Kim Gok-mi of the Chungnam Information & Culture Industry Promotion Agency aptly summarized the positive impact, stating that the agency-supported content is "reilluminating Hongseong's diverse locations as special tourist spots imbued with emotion and stories." She further emphasized the agency's commitment to actively attracting and supporting filming projects to solidify Hongseong County's position as an "attractive filming destination."

By strategically leveraging its growing reputation as a filming hub and actively promoting its inherent attractions, Hongseong County is poised to transform its cinematic appeal into tangible tourism success, making the "2025 Visit Hongseong Year" a potential landmark in its journey towards becoming a leading West Coast tourism destination. The seamless blend of cultural storytelling through film and the authentic experiences offered by Hongseong's landscapes and heritage creates a compelling narrative that is sure to resonate with travelers seeking unique and engaging destinations.
