E-Mart Launches 'Suneung Daebak Prayer' Sale to Boost Student Morale

SEOUL — E-Mart, a leading South Korean retailer (KRX: 139480), has announced a major promotional event to support students preparing for the high-stakes College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), or Suneung, which is scheduled for November 14 this year. The "Suneung Daebak Prayer" event, offering special discounts on snacks and essential winter items, will run from November 3 to 12.

The CSAT is widely regarded as the most crucial academic event in South Korea, significantly determining a student's university placement and future career prospects. As such, retailers seize the opportunity to offer products that serve both as good luck gifts and practical test-day necessities.

Discounts on Exam-Day Essentials and Good Luck Treats

E-Mart's promotion covers a wide array of products traditionally gifted to students or required for the long exam day.

Sweet Incentives: Chocolates, candies, and jellies—popular morale boosters—are key components of the sale. Customers purchasing over 20,000 KRW worth of these items from 10 major brands, including Lotte Wellfood (KRX: 280360), Haitai, and Orion (KRX: 271560), will receive a 5,000 KRW gift certificate. The coveted 'Ferrero Rocher Collection T9,' a popular Suneung gift, will be sold at half price for members who accumulate Shinsegae Points.
Thermal Comfort: Given the late autumn date of the exam, proper temperature control in the examination room is crucial. E-Mart is offering up to a 50% discount on thermal lunchboxes and flasks necessary for keeping test-day meals warm. Specifically, a line of LocknLock CSAT-themed tumblers is being sold at over 30% lower than previous models. Thermos brand vacuum-insulated products will also see a maximum 50% discount for Shinsegae Point members.
Test-Taking Gear: Practical items for the test day are also on sale. A special "CSAT Pass Wristwatch," compliant with exam regulations, is available at a 20% discount, priced in the 10,000 KRW range. Additionally, seat cushions, blankets for indoor warmth, and hot packs to combat the chilly weather are being offered at promotional prices.

Convenience Store Support and Pepero Day Focus

In a related initiative, E-Mart24, the convenience store arm of E-Mart, has partnered with Seoul National University’s technology holding company, Bobsnue, to offer a discount on the "Yak-Kong Soy Milk Bread Series." Throughout November, customers purchasing two or more items from the six-product series (excluding the Lucky Yak-Kong Cookie Gift Set) will receive a 30% discount, offering a nutritious, brain-boosting snack option.

Furthermore, capitalizing on the proximity of the sales event to 'Pepero Day' on November 11—a cultural holiday for exchanging stick-shaped snacks—E-Mart has also prepared a separate snack discount. From November 3 to 12, a 5,000 KRW gift certificate will be given for purchases over 30,000 KRW of Lotte Pepero (21 varieties) and for purchases over 25,000 KRW of Haitai Pocky (20 varieties).

The combined promotions reflect the intense national focus on the CSAT, providing students and their families with opportunities to purchase necessary supplies and symbolic gifts at reduced prices in the final days before the highly significant academic event.
