Victorian Surgeon Under Police Investigation for Alleged "Unnecessary" Hysterectomies

MELBOURNE, Australia – A prominent gynecologist in Melbourne is facing a criminal investigation and a massive class-action lawsuit following allegations that he performed hundreds of unnecessary organ removals on women, leaving them with life-altering physical and psychological trauma.

The Allegations: "Pathological Evidence Missing"
Dr. Simon Gordon, once a highly-regarded specialist at Epworth Private Hospital, is accused of diagnosing patients with "severe endometriosis" despite little to no clinical evidence. Based on these questionable diagnoses, he allegedly performed hysterectomies (removal of the uterus) and oophorectomies (removal of the ovaries) on women, many of whom were in their prime reproductive years.

According to investigative reports by the ABC, subsequent pathology tests on the removed organs often showed no signs of the disease Gordon claimed to be treating. For the victims, the result was catastrophic: permanent infertility and chronic, debilitating pain that persists long after the surgeries.

Political and Legal Fallout
The scandal has reached the highest levels of the Victorian government. Premier Jacinta Allan, who has publicly shared her own struggle with endometriosis, expressed her outrage on Tuesday.

"As a woman who has lived with this condition, I find these reports deeply disturbing," Premier Allan stated. "Performing invasive surgery to remove a woman's organs without clinical necessity is not just malpractice; it is a profound violation that borders on criminal conduct. I have formally referred this matter to the police."

Law firms are currently organizing a class-action lawsuit representing over 120 women. The victims describe a pattern of "medical gaslighting," where their concerns were dismissed by Dr. Gordon even as their health deteriorated post-surgery.

Regulatory Failure: AHPRA Under Fire
The case has ignited a firestorm of criticism against the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Evidence suggests that both patients and fellow medical professionals had raised red flags regarding Dr. Gordon’s surgical rates for years.

However, AHPRA reportedly dismissed these complaints, at one point concluding that his practices were "within the range of acceptable clinical judgment." In response to the growing public outcry, AHPRA issued a statement confirming they are "actively reviewing the assessment and management of similar cases" and re-examining Dr. Gordon’s historical patient records.

The Doctor’s Defense and Resignation
Dr. Gordon retired in November 2025, shortly after the initial allegations surfaced, and voluntarily surrendered his medical registration in February 2026. Despite the mounting evidence and the police probe, he continues to deny any wrongdoing. Through his representatives, Gordon maintained that he acted "at all times in the best interests of his patients" and within professional guidelines.

Moving Forward
Epworth Private Hospital has launched its own internal audit to determine how such a high volume of radical surgeries went unnoticed by its oversight committees. For the 120 women seeking justice, however, no investigation can restore what was taken from them.

"This isn't just about a bad doctor," said one anonymous victim. "It's about a system that failed to protect women when we were at our most vulnerable."
