Daejeon, South Korea - Daejeon Metropolitan City, in a vibrant display of community spirit and historical reflection, commemorated the 15th annual Saemaeul Day on Tuesday, April 29th, alongside the Daejeon City Saemaeul Association. The grand auditorium of the Daejeon City Hall served as the venue for this significant event, marking the 55th anniversary of the inception of the transformative Saemaeul Movement.

The ceremony drew a distinguished gathering of over 700 attendees, including key figures such as Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo, Daejeon City Council Chairman Cho Won-hwi, esteemed members of the national assembly representing the region, the heads of various district offices within Daejeon, and the dedicated President of the Daejeon City Saemaeul Association, Mr. Park Young-bok, along with numerous enthusiastic Saemaeul members.

The 55th anniversary of the Saemaeul Movement lent a profound historical weight to this year's commemoration. The movement, which began in 1970, is widely credited with catalyzing South Korea's remarkable rural development and modernization. Rooted in the core tenets of diligence, self-reliance, and cooperation, the Saemaeul Movement fostered a nationwide spirit of community engagement and played a pivotal role in the nation's economic ascent.

A highlight of the event was the recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of local communities through their unwavering dedication to the Saemaeul spirit. Twelve exemplary individuals were bestowed with prestigious commendations, acknowledging their tireless efforts and impactful service within the framework of the movement's ideals.

In a gesture of mutual respect and appreciation, the Daejeon City Saemaeul Association presented formal plaques of gratitude to Mayor Lee Jang-woo and Council Chairman Cho Won-hwi. These presentations underscored the strong collaborative relationship between the city administration and the Saemaeul organization, recognizing the consistent support and partnership extended by the city's leadership over the years.

Mr. Park Young-bok, in his heartfelt commemorative address, eloquently traced the historical trajectory of the Saemaeul Movement. He emphasized its foundational ethos of "We can do it," highlighting how this resolute spirit of proactive engagement had been instrumental in reshaping the landscape of South Korea. Looking towards the future, President Park stressed the imperative for the Saemaeul Movement to adapt and evolve in tandem with the dynamic shifts in society. He articulated a clear vision for the future of the movement in Daejeon, proclaiming, "Under the banner of 'Together, Saemaeul, Towards the Future!', the Daejeon Saemaeul Movement is committed to collaboratively forging a bright and hopeful future for our region."

Mayor Lee Jang-woo echoed these sentiments in his address, acknowledging the profound and enduring impact of the Saemaeul Movement. He stated, "The Saemaeul Movement, born 55 years ago, fundamentally transformed the lives of our citizens through its emphasis on diligence, self-reliance, and cooperation. It laid the very foundation for the remarkable development that South Korea enjoys today." Mayor Lee further lauded the ongoing contributions of the Saemaeul Association, noting, "Even now, the members of the Saemaeul Association are working tirelessly and quietly in every corner of our city, serving as an indispensable pillar of our society."

Looking ahead, Mayor Lee expressed his aspirations for continued collaboration, stating, "As Daejeon embarks on its journey to become a world-class economic hub in partnership with its citizens, I sincerely hope that the Saemaeul Association will continue to play a central and vital role in this endeavor."

The observance of Saemaeul Day holds significant national importance, enshrined in law under the Saemaeul Undong Jojik Yukseongbeop (Saemaeul Movement Organization Fostering Act). The designation of April 22nd as Saemaeul Day commemorates the historic day in 1970 when the 'Saemaeul Undong (New Village Movement) Campaign' was first officially proposed. Since its formal establishment as a national commemorative day in 2011, Saemaeul Day has served as an annual occasion for Saemaeul leaders from across the nation to come together, strengthen their bonds, and reaffirm their collective commitment to the movement's enduring principles and future aspirations. The Daejeon commemoration served as a powerful testament to the continued relevance and vitality of the Saemaeul spirit in contemporary South Korea.
