Yeongdeok, South Korea – The Yeongdeok coast of the Gyeongbuk East Sea Geopark is set to become a major destination for eco-tourism, following its recent designation as an eco-tourism zone by the Ministry of Environment.

The designation will allow the region to develop and operate eco-tourism programs, with government support for training nature guides, empowering local communities, and establishing the necessary infrastructure. As a result, the area will be prioritized for funding under the government's eco-tourism development initiative.

The Gyeongbuk East Sea Geopark, encompassing 11 geological sites in Yeongdeok County, including the Yeongdeok Sunrise Park and Daebunjung, was approved by the UNESCO Geoparks Council in September. The final approval is pending at the UNESCO General Conference in Paris in May next year.

Unique Features and Potential

The Yeongdeok coast boasts a wealth of geological heritage, offering visitors breathtaking coastal scenery, hiking trails, and unique ecological features. The region's combination of geological significance, beautiful landscapes, and existing infrastructure makes it an ideal location for eco-tourism.

Government Support

The Gyeongbuk provincial government plans to further develop the region's eco-tourism potential by improving trails, providing amenities, and creating unique experiential programs. The goal is to position eco-tourism as a key driver for local economic development.

Regional Impact

With the addition of the Yeongdeok coast, Gyeongbuk Province now has four eco-tourism zones, including Uljin Wangpichun Valley, Yeongyang Night Sky and Firefly Park, and Mungyeong Doline Wetland. These areas offer a variety of eco-tourism experiences, attracting visitors from both domestic and international markets.

Park Ki-wan, Director of the Gyeongbuk Climate and Environment Division, expressed his optimism about the region's future, stating, "The Yeongdeok coast, with its beautiful coastal scenery and rich geological and ecological resources, has great potential to become a world-class eco-tourism destination. By investing in infrastructure and developing unique programs, we aim to make eco-tourism a driving force for local economic growth."

In conclusion, the designation of the Yeongdeok coast as an eco-tourism zone is a significant step forward for the region. With its stunning natural beauty and rich geological heritage, the area is poised to become a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
