CHEONAN, South Chungcheong Province – A major fire erupted at the E-Land Fashion logistics center in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, on the morning of November 15. Firefighting efforts, which lasted approximately nine and a half hours, successfully contained the main blaze. While authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported, the incident is expected to cause severe logistical disruptions for E-Land Fashion’s major brands due to the extensive damage to the facility and the destruction of a massive inventory.
Fire Response and Operational Challenges
The fire broke out around 6:10 a.m. at the large-scale logistics center located in Pungse-myeon, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan. Fire authorities initially issued a Level 1 response but quickly escalated it to a Level 2 alert, mobilizing personnel and equipment from multiple neighboring fire stations as the flames spread rapidly. A total of 430 personnel, 150 pieces of equipment, and 11 fire helicopters were deployed to battle the inferno, which was brought under initial control around 3:31 p.m.
The facility, which opened in July 2014, is a large-scale distribution hub spanning one basement level and four above-ground floors, with a total area of $193,210 text{ m}^2$. It stored goods for over 10 key E-Land Fashion brands, including New Balance, SPAO, Roem, and Who.A.U. All three employees, including the security guards on duty, safely evacuated, preventing any loss of life.
However, the nature of the stored materials—clothing and footwear—acted as an accelerant, making containment extremely difficult. The fire, which reportedly started on the fourth floor, spread downwards, leading to the collapse of some structural elements after prolonged exposure to the intense heat. Firefighters faced significant obstacles in gaining entry due to the severity of the fire and blocked access routes. The warehouse and millions of clothing items are believed to be completely destroyed.
Business Impact and Customer Notification
E-Land Fashion promptly notified customers of the logistical fallout. Brands such as New Balance issued public apologies on their websites, stating that "unexpected delays in logistics center operations have resulted in longer-than-usual shipping times for some orders." They assured customers that orders were being prepared for sequential shipment.
Given the scale of the facility's destruction and the massive inventory loss, particularly just before the peak year-end shopping season, E-Land Fashion faces considerable financial damages. The company is expected to grapple with significant challenges in restoring its distribution system and ensuring product supply over the coming months. Police and fire officials are set to launch a full investigation into the exact cause of the blaze and the precise scope of the damage after final extinguishing operations are complete.
