TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN – The Republic of Korea's remarkable run of championships in the Asian Women's Junior Handball tournament has come to an end. The U-19 squad was defeated 18-20 by arch-rival Japan in the final of the 18th Asian Women's Junior Handball Championship, held on August 29th in Tashkent.

Under the guidance of coach Kim Gyeong-jin, the team had been an unstoppable force, securing victory in every previous tournament they had competed in, with the sole exception of the 16th edition, which they were unable to attend due to pandemic-related travel restrictions. This year, however, the team had to settle for a silver medal after a hard-fought battle.

The final match was a nail-biter from the start. Both teams were locked in a tense, low-scoring affair, with the scoreboard showing a 13-13 tie in the second half. It was at this crucial point that Japan seized the momentum, scoring four consecutive goals and putting the Korean team on the back foot.

Despite the setback, the Korean players showed incredible resolve. Seo Ah-yeong led the charge with a game-high 7 goals, tirelessly fighting to close the gap. Teammates Gu Hyeon-ji, Kim Bo-gyeong, and Lee Ye-seo also contributed key goals to bring the score within two points, but time ultimately ran out. The Japanese defense held firm in the final moments, securing their historic victory.

While the loss was disappointing, two players were recognized for their outstanding performance throughout the tournament. Kim Bo-gyeong and Lee Ye-seo were both selected for the "Best 7" all-tournament team, a testament to their skill and contributions to the team's success.

The Korean team will return home to Incheon International Airport on Sunday morning. Despite the final result, their journey to the final and the talent on display promises a bright future for South Korean handball.
