MOU signed with the Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology, strengthening the connection between research outcomes and industry
To be held annually from 2026 to 2030… Expected to attract 3,000 visitors annually, aiming to become a global

Daejeon Metropolitan City has strategically positioned itself as a burgeoning hub for the life sciences, securing a significant five-year commitment to host the annual regular academic conference of the Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology (KSMCB), the nation's foremost authority in the field. This landmark agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on April 28th, signifies a concerted effort to bridge the gap between cutting-edge basic research and the burgeoning local bio-industry, with aspirations of transforming Daejeon into a globally recognized bio-innovation center.

The five-year hosting period, commencing in 2026 and extending through 2030, is projected to bring an influx of approximately 3,000 leading scientists, industry experts, and investors to Daejeon each year. The KSMCB, established in 1989, boasts a membership exceeding 19,000 researchers and professionals and is renowned for its annual conferences that attract prominent international figures in molecular and cellular biology. This sustained presence of a high-caliber scientific community is expected to create a vibrant ecosystem conducive to knowledge exchange, collaboration, and the translation of research breakthroughs into tangible industrial applications.

Daejeon, already home to the esteemed Daedeok Research and Development Special Zone, possesses a robust foundation in research and development infrastructure. This special zone houses numerous government-funded research institutes, universities, and private sector R&D centers, fostering a unique environment of collaboration across academia, industry, research organizations, and hospitals – a model of open innovation lauded by city officials. The partnership with KSMCB is strategically aligned to leverage this existing ecosystem, creating synergistic opportunities for growth and innovation within the local bio-industry.

The city anticipates a multitude of benefits stemming from this long-term hosting agreement. Firstly, it is expected to forge stronger linkages between fundamental life science research conducted in Daejeon's institutions and the practical needs and advancements of the regional bio-industry. This enhanced interaction can accelerate the commercialization of promising discoveries and drive the development of innovative biotechnologies.

Secondly, the annual influx of national and international experts will provide invaluable networking opportunities for local bio-startups and established companies alike. The conferences will serve as a platform for these entities to connect with potential investors, collaborators, and mentors, fostering the growth and expansion of Daejeon's bio-venture ecosystem. The increased visibility on the national and international stage is also anticipated to attract further investment and talent to the region.

Furthermore, the consistent hosting of a large-scale international conference will provide a significant boost to Daejeon's Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry. The influx of attendees will generate economic activity across various sectors, including hospitality, tourism, and local businesses, contributing to the overall economic vitality of the city.

Lee Seung-bok, the incoming President of the KSMCB for 2026 and a distinguished professor at Seoul National University, emphasized the society's commitment to contributing to Daejeon's bio-industrial advancement. "The KSMCB is committed to ensuring that the outstanding research outcomes of our members actively contribute to the development of Daejeon's bio-industry," he stated, highlighting the potential for mutual benefit and growth.

Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo expressed his optimism about the transformative potential of the agreement. "Daejeon's bio-industry boasts the nation's premier open innovation ecosystem, seamlessly connecting industry, academia, research institutions, and hospitals, all underpinned by the robust R&D infrastructure of the Daedeok Research and Development Special Zone," he affirmed. "We firmly believe that this agreement will mark the beginning of a substantial collaborative journey, where life science research and our local bio-industry are deeply intertwined, fostering mutual growth and propelling Daejeon towards its goal of becoming a global bio-hub."

To further solidify its position, Daejeon has been actively investing in infrastructure and initiatives to support the growth of its bio-industry. This includes the development of specialized bio-clusters, the provision of funding and support programs for bio-startups, and the streamlining of regulatory processes. The city is also strategically focusing on attracting talent and fostering a supportive environment for innovation. The partnership with KSMCB is a key component of this broader strategy, leveraging the academic prestige and networking power of the society to elevate Daejeon's standing in the global biotechnology landscape.

The sustained hosting of the KSMCB's annual conference is expected to create a ripple effect, attracting related events, investments, and collaborations to Daejeon over the next five years and beyond. This strategic alliance underscores Daejeon's commitment to nurturing its bio-industry and solidifying its position as a leading center for life science innovation in South Korea and on the international stage. The collaboration between academia and industry, facilitated by this agreement, holds immense promise for accelerating scientific discovery and translating it into real-world solutions that benefit society.
