Old San Juan, Puerto Rico – The historic streets of Old San Juan have transformed into a vibrant stage for the 10th annual Circo Fest, a street circus festival that has become a cultural phenomenon. From March 9th-10th, 2025, an estimated 20,000 attendees flooded the colonial district, immersing themselves in the mesmerizing performances of clowns, acrobats, jugglers, and dancers from around the globe.
"Circo Fest is more than just entertainment; it's a celebration of cultural exchange," explains Maite Rivera Carbonell, the artistic director and founder of ACirc, the organization behind the festival. "We strive to bring a diverse range of international talent to Puerto Rico, creating a powerful fusion of artistic disciplines."
This year's festival features 39 acts, with a curated selection of international artists hailing from countries such as Italy, Chile, Argentina, Canada, France, the United States, Brazil, and Australia. Notable performances include the gravity-defying feats of Italian duo Circo Carpa Diem, and the comedic stylings of Chilean clown, Karcocha.
The festival also provides a platform for local talent, with 31 Puerto Rican companies showcasing their skills. The event spanned eleven venues throughout the Barrio Ballajá, including iconic locations like the Museum of San Juan and Plaza del Quinto Centenario. A new addition to this years festival was a skate park, where a skateboarder from western Puerto Rico showed off their skills.
"We're incredibly proud of the international recognition Circo Fest has received," says Rivera Carbonell. "Each year, we receive an overwhelming number of applications from artists eager to participate."
Despite its success, Circo Fest faces challenges. Limited funding and logistical constraints restrict the number of international acts that can be hosted. "We're a small organization with a big vision," Rivera Carbonell admits. "We rely heavily on the support of volunteers and the community."
The festival concluded with a grand finale at Plaza del Quinto Centenario, where international artists showcased their most impressive acts. Following the festival, a select group of performers will embark on a tour of several municipalities, bringing the magic of Circo Fest to a wider audience. The tour will include performances in Vieques, Canóvanas, Bayamón, and Arecibo.
Looking ahead, the future of Circo Fest remains uncertain. "We've proven that this festival is a valuable cultural asset," Rivera Carbonell states. "However, without increased government support, we cannot guarantee its continuation."
Circo Fest has become a beloved tradition in Puerto Rico, attracting both locals and tourists alike. The festival not only provides entertainment, but also fosters community engagement and promotes cultural exchange.
