PARIS — The stage is set for a high-stakes semifinal clash at the 2025 Badminton World Championships, as top-ranked An Se-young of South Korea prepares to face her long-standing rival, Chen Yufei of China. This highly anticipated matchup follows both players’ commanding quarterfinal victories, keeping their championship aspirations alive.

An, the world’s No. 1 women’s singles player, dominated her quarterfinal match against compatriot Sim Yu-jin, securing a swift 2-0 (21-10, 21-6) win in just 35 minutes. Her performance was a clear signal that she has fully recovered from a knee injury that forced her to retire from the China Open earlier this season. An’s impressive run this year includes a string of Super 1000 tournament wins, solidifying her status as the sport's most dominant force.

Her opponent, world No. 4 Chen Yufei, also advanced with a decisive 2-0 (22-20, 21-14) victory over Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong. The rivalry between An and Chen is one of the sport's most compelling, with a perfectly balanced head-to-head record of 13 wins apiece. Chen is one of only two players to have defeated An this season, ending her winning streak at the Singapore Open in May. However, An has since avenged that loss with two subsequent victories.

The winner of the An vs. Chen match will likely face another formidable opponent in the final: Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. Yamaguchi, who also secured her semifinal spot, is An's other primary rival and a former world champion. With a potential final against Yamaguchi looming, An Se-young's path to the championship title is a true test of her skill and mental fortitude. The outcome of the semifinal promises to be a thrilling chapter in this fierce rivalry, with a spot in the world championship final on the line.
