The nighttime "Búho" (Owl) bus service, introduced to address citizens' need for public transportation during late hours, is gaining popularity as a fast and economical means of transport. The B1 route, connecting downtown Asunción and San Lorenzo, has notably recorded 30,620 boardings and 2,387 operations to date, demonstrating sustained public interest.
One user, who works from 9 PM to 2 AM, expressed satisfaction, stating, "Now I can save a lot on transportation costs. It's truly beneficial for night shift workers. It's a fantastic service." Another passenger commented, "I think this service is a good economic alternative. It's very comfortable, and the bus comes quickly. It's an excellent service, and I use it frequently."
'Búho' Service Prepares for Successful Data-Driven Expansion
Based on the successful operational data of the B1 route and positive user feedback, the Deputy Ministry of Transportation is pushing for the expansion of the nighttime public transportation service, dubbed the "Búho Network" (Red Búho). Proposals from companies interested in operating three new routes—B2, B3, and B4—are currently under evaluation. The goal is to extend nighttime public transportation coverage to key strategic areas in the metropolitan region.
The 'Búho Network' was designed after meticulous technical analysis to thoroughly examine the feasibility and demand of selected routes. The new routes will connect Asunción with Limpio and Mariano Roque Alonso via the northern entrance. Through the southern entrance, they will link Ñemby, San Lorenzo, Fernando de la Mora, and Lambaré with Asunción, and via the northeastern entrance, they will connect Luque with Asunción.
Establishing a Safe and Convenient Nighttime Travel Environment
The newly added routes are scheduled to operate from 10 PM to 3:30 AM. This service will offer not only fixed stops but also a demand-responsive stop system to maximize user convenience. All buses will be monitored in real-time through GPS, surveillance cameras, and performance management systems. Additionally, police personnel will accompany the buses to ensure safety and security.
An official from the Ministry of Transportation emphasized, "Providing a safe and economical alternative for citizens who must travel during late hours is the core objective of the 'Búho' service." They added, "We will do our best to ensure more citizens can conveniently use public transportation through the introduction of new routes." This expansion of the 'Búho Network' is expected to be a significant step forward in enhancing the nighttime public transportation system in Paraguay's metropolitan area. It is also anticipated to positively impact citizens' quality of life and stimulate economic activity.
