The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) announced on August 13, 2026, that it has issued a nationwide malaria alert. This decision follows the laboratory confirmation of Plasmodium vivax (the malaria parasite found in Korea) within Anopheles mosquitoes collected in the Gyeonggi province. 

Escalation of Health Warning

The discovery of the parasite in the vector mosquitoes marks a significant shift in the risk profile. Unlike a standard advisory, which often relies on mosquito population density, the presence of the parasite means that a bite from an infected mosquito now poses a direct, real-world risk of contracting the disease. 

The KDCA confirmed that genetic material from the malaria parasite was identified in mosquitoes collected in Paju and Yeoncheon (Gyeonggi) during the 31st week of the year (July 27 to August 2). 

Earlier this year, the KDCA had already issued a nationwide malaria advisory on June 22 due to an uptick in mosquito activity. By mid-August, the agency had localized "alert" status in five specific high-risk regions—Paju and Gimpo (Gyeonggi), Ganghwa County and Gyeyang District (Incheon), and Yanggu County (Gangwon)—where cases had clustered. With the latest detection, this alert level has now been expanded to cover the entire country. 

Current Status and Outlook

Despite the heightened alert, overall malaria infection rates have remained lower than in previous years. Data from the KDCA shows that 201 domestic malaria cases were recorded between January 1 and August 1, 2026, representing a 43.4% decrease compared to the 355 cases reported during the same period in 2025. The KDCA attributes the current lower density of mosquitoes to the extreme heat waves experienced recently. 

However, health officials warn against complacency. Lim Seung-kwan, Commissioner of the KDCA, cautioned that "mosquito density could surge again once the extreme heat subsides." He urged local governments in high-risk areas to intensify integrated pest management efforts. 

Essential Prevention and Safety Guidelines

Health experts emphasize that while the risk of transmission is present, it can be significantly mitigated through proactive personal protection and early medical intervention.

1. Personal Protective Measures:

Avoid Nighttime Exposure: Anopheles mosquitoes are most active between dusk and dawn. It is highly recommended to stay indoors during these hours. 
Protective Clothing: When outdoors, wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long pants to minimize exposed skin. 
Repellents and Barriers: Use insect repellents containing effective ingredients like DEET, Icaridin, or IR3535 on exposed skin and clothing. Utilize mosquito nets while sleeping, especially in areas without adequate air conditioning or window screens. 

2. Early Diagnosis is Critical:

Malaria symptoms, which often mimic those of the flu, typically appear 7 to 30 days after a bite. Common symptoms include: 

Sudden high fever and shaking chills. 
Headaches and muscle aches. 
Extreme fatigue and nausea. 

"If you experience fever, chills, or other suspected symptoms, do not assume it is just the flu," Commissioner Lim advised. "Visit a public health center or medical institution immediately for a diagnostic test. Early detection is the most effective way to prevent the disease from progressing into a severe, life-threatening condition." 

As the country remains on high alert, residents are encouraged to stay informed through official government health channels and to adhere strictly to recommended vector-control practices to ensure public safety throughout the remainder of the mosquito season.
