Selection to Canadian National Team Elevates Brock University Rowing Program's Standing

Three outstanding athletes from Brock University's men's rowing program have been selected to represent Canada at the Junior Pan American Games qualification regatta in Asunción, Paraguay.

Euan Coulson, Riley Watson, and Maddox Harrison have joined the Canadian national team for the qualifying event taking place from March 19th to 22nd, a crucial step towards competing in the upcoming Junior Pan American Games. Their participation marks a significant milestone in the individual rowing careers of these athletes and is a moment of great pride for the Brock University rowing community. Furthermore, Brock University's head coach, Katie Bruggeling, will also be heading to Paraguay as part of Rowing Canada Aviron's (RCA) coaching staff.

The national team athletes and coaching staff began pre-competition training on March 14th, allowing for several days of acclimatization in Paraguay before competing against top athletes from across the Americas. This international debut in the Maple Leaf jersey will undoubtedly be a memorable experience for all three student-athletes.

In a joint statement, the athletes expressed their excitement: "We are incredibly honored to represent our country and the Brock Badgers, and we want to make our nation and school proud. We are so grateful for this opportunity and deeply appreciate the support of the Brock University rowing program in helping us pursue our dreams."

These three athletes are making their international debut after a successful university season. They achieved remarkable results, securing three medals at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships and two medals at the Canadian University Rowing Championships (CURC).

Watson played a significant role in winning gold in the lightweight four event and silver in the lightweight double at the OUA Championships. He also teamed up with Coulson and Harrison in the men's eight, earning a silver medal at the OUA Championships and a bronze medal at CURC. Coulson further demonstrated his individual prowess by winning a silver medal in the men's four event at the OUA Championships.

Coach Bruggeling emphasized the significance of this international competition for both the program and the individual athletes. "It's an incredible opportunity for our Brock University rowers to participate in the Junior Pan American Games qualification regatta," she stated, adding that this international event will serve as an excellent test. The selection of these athletes to the Canadian national team was made through RCA's rigorous athlete identification system.

Rowing Canada Aviron's NextGen athlete assessment and management program utilizes performances at domestic competitions such as CURC, OUA Championships, National Rowing Championships, and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in its evaluations. The final selections were based on athletes demonstrating consistency, competitiveness, and readiness for international competition.

This national team selection reflects the strong foundation of the Brock University rowing program, from athlete development to coaching leadership. Brock University continues to be a strong presence in the rowing community, and this achievement further solidifies its position as a leading Canadian university for elite rowing.
