Seattle, WA – Amazon's recent decision to vacate its office space at Met Park North in South Lake Union has left local businesses concerned about the potential loss of customers and foot traffic. Approximately 800 employees have been relocated to other Amazon facilities in the Puget Sound region.
While Amazon has declined to provide specific reasons for the move, reports suggest that the company is consolidating its office space to reduce rental costs. Eli Mattas, manager of Market House Meats, indicated that Amazon employees had mentioned the company's desire to avoid paying rent for vacant spaces in other owned buildings.
The departure of Amazon employees has already had a noticeable impact on local businesses. Mattas noted a significant decline in foot traffic at his restaurant, which had previously relied on the influx of customers from the nearby office building.
Nick Feil, an employee at a Subway sandwich shop located within Met Park North, echoed these concerns. He emphasized that many businesses in the area cater to Amazon employees and that their departure could have severe consequences.
As Amazon transitions to a mandatory five-day workweek, local businesses in the Howell Street neighborhood will likely experience continued challenges. With the loss of a major tenant and a potential decrease in foot traffic, some businesses may struggle to maintain their operations.
