A delegation from Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), including representatives from the College of Islamic Studies (CIS), the College of Public Policy (CPP), Earthna, the Qatar Ministry of Municipality, and Georgetown University Qatar, visited Singapore to exchange insights on sustainable food security strategies with academic, government, and industry experts. This visit, part of a knowledge dissemination initiative funded by the Qatar Research Development and Innovation Council (QRDI), aimed to enhance cooperation and knowledge exchange between the two nations.
Saoud bin Jassim Al-Jufairi, Qatar's Ambassador to Singapore, welcomed the delegation and emphasized the importance of knowledge transfer between the two countries. The delegation participated in a two-day workshop on food security and crisis management at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), where they engaged in in-depth discussions on Qatar and Singapore's food security strategies and crisis management approaches.
During the workshop, the Qatari delegation presented an overview of Qatar's food security policies, supply chain, and sustainable water management efforts, sharing Qatari case studies. In response, NTU officials highlighted Singapore's various food sustainability initiatives, including support for hydroponic agriculture and food waste policies.
Notably, Dr. Dalal Aassouli conducted a masterclass focusing on sustainable agricultural finance, providing attendees with practical knowledge and tools. This masterclass was enriched through collaboration with major international organizations such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Grow Asia, and Dalberg Advisors.
Dr. Aassouli assessed that this visit served as a crucial opportunity to strengthen HBKU's knowledge exchange and initiatives in the fields of food security and sustainable finance. Ambassador Al-Jufairi emphasized that Qatar and Singapore share a common commitment to enhancing food security through cooperation, innovation, and strategic partnerships.
Abdul Jalil Abdul Kader, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Operations at the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), pointed out that in an increasingly unpredictable world, no country can solve food security issues in isolation, highlighting the necessity of cooperation between Singapore and Qatar.
This collaboration is expected to contribute to strengthening the sustainable food security efforts of both countries through Qatar's 'National Food Security Strategy 2030' and Singapore's '30 by 30' goal, and to enhance the resilience of the global food system.
