Folding Boots: The Latest Trend Taking the Fashion World by Storm

A new boot style that was once a niche trend is now taking the fashion world by storm. Folding boots, also known as wide fold-over boots, are characterized by their wide, slouchy shaft that can be folded down to create a unique and stylish look.

The origins of the folding boot can be traced back to 2012 when Riccardo Tisci, then the creative director of Givenchy, introduced the "Shark Lock" boot. This innovative design garnered significant attention in the fashion industry, and according to Elizabeth Kasap, a fashion stylist and the founder of @stylistcheck, the "Shark Lock" was the only folding boot of its kind until recently.

The resurgence of folding boots can be attributed to the revival of Y2K fashion and the popularity of leg warmers in the fall of 2023. Brands such as The Attico, Isabel Marant, Staud, and Paris Texas have introduced their own takes on the folding boot, captivating fashion enthusiasts.

In South Korea, the trend has gained rapid traction, thanks in part to K-pop idols and fashion influencers. Winter, a member of the girl group aespa, recently sparked a frenzy when she was spotted wearing a pair of folding boots from The Attico. Her choice of footwear, the Robin Dark Grey Combat Boot, features a suede upper and a silver-toned metal logo.

"With the rise of 'Pinterest styling' and 'closet accounts,' where people seek inspiration for their outfits, the popularity of folding boots is likely to continue," said fashion MD Jo Jung-yeon.

The popularity of folding boots is evident in sales data. According to the fashion platform Musinsa, search volume for "folding boots" increased 35-fold in October compared to the previous month.

While high-end brands like The Attico offer premium options, more affordable alternatives are also available from brands such as 3twoeight, Moodnight, Rockfish Weatherwear, Elcanto, Sapun, and Shoopen.

"Folding boots are versatile and effortless to style," said fashion stylist Jeong Hee-sun. "The voluminous shaft pairs well with short pants or jeans, creating a chic and casual look."

With their unique design and versatility, folding boots are poised to be a staple in many wardrobes this season and beyond.
