MOSCOW — Russia's Ministry of Defence announced on Wednesday a massive downing of Ukrainian drones, claiming to have intercepted a record 278 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in a single night. This surge in aerial activity marks one of the largest concentrations of drone attacks since Russia initiated its "special military operation" in Ukraine in February 2022.

The Russian defence ministry stated that the interceptions took place between 11:00 PM the previous night and 7:00 AM local time. According to the official statement, 40 of the destroyed drones were shot down over the Moscow Region (Moskovskaya Oblast), with 32 of them allegedly en route to the capital, Moscow. While the extent of the damage within Moscow and its surrounding region remains undisclosed, the threat was significant enough to cause a temporary closure of all four major airports serving the capital.

The most intense drone activity was reported over the Bryansk Region, which borders Ukraine, where a staggering 118 UAVs were reportedly intercepted. Other regions also experienced concentrated attacks: 40 drones were shot down over the Kaluga Region, 27 over the Tula Region, 19 over the Novgorod Region, 11 over the Yaroslavl Region, 10 over Lipetsk, 6 over the Smolensk Region, 5 each over the Kursk and Oryol Regions, 4 over the Voronezh Region, and 2 over the Ryazan Region.

This widespread series of strikes underscores the escalating nature of the conflict, particularly the tit-for-tat attacks on vital infrastructure. For months, Russia has been launching focused attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities. In response, Ukraine has increasingly employed drones to target Russian oil refineries and petroleum export facilities, demonstrating a growing capability to strike deep within Russian territory.

Diplomatic Efforts Amidst Escalation

The heightened military activity occurs concurrently with ongoing diplomatic maneuverings. According to reports citing officials and published the day prior, Ukraine, in collaboration with its European allies, has delivered a revised peace proposal to the United States. This move comes as Kyiv faces pressure from US President Donald Trump to accept a specific set of terms for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The details of the revised peace plan remain confidential, but its submission signals a commitment to finding a negotiated settlement, even as the conflict's aerial dimension intensifies dramatically.

The sheer volume of drones launched and subsequently intercepted in one night highlights the growing strategic importance of UAVs in the conflict, not only as precision weapons but also as tools for probing and overwhelming air defense systems. Russia’s claim of successful neutralization will likely be analyzed by military experts globally for insights into the capacity of its anti-drone defense network, particularly around the highly protected Moscow area.
