Asunción, Paraguay – Alejandro Domínguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), has issued an apology following his controversial remarks comparing Brazilian football clubs to "Tarzan's chimpanzees." The comment, made after the Copa Libertadores draw, ignited a firestorm of criticism, especially given the ongoing concerns about racism in South American football.

Domínguez's initial statement, where he likened the tournament without Brazilian teams to "Tarzan without Cheetah," was perceived as deeply offensive, particularly in light of recent incidents of racial abuse. He stated in his apology “Regarding my recent comments, I wish to apologize. The expression I used is a commonly used phrase, and I had no intention of disrespecting or belittling anyone.” He further stated “CONMEBOL Libertadores is unimaginable without the participation of clubs from our 10 member nations. I have always promoted respect and inclusion in football and society, which are core values of CONMEBOL. I reaffirm my commitment to continuing to work towards a more just, united, and non-discriminatory football.”

The controversy arose against a backdrop of heightened sensitivity regarding racism in South American football. Brazilian players and fans have endured numerous instances of racist abuse, including monkey chants and other derogatory actions during away matches.   

Most notably, Palmeiras' forward Luighi was subjected to racist taunts by Cerro Porteño fans during a U-20 Copa Libertadores match, prompting him to express his distress in tears. While CONMEBOL imposed a $50,000 fine and a fan attendance ban on Cerro Porteño, Brazilian clubs deemed the punishment insufficient.

The incident and Domínguez's subsequent comments have fueled further criticism. Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães, speaking ahead of a World Cup qualifier, stated, "The CONMEBOL president cannot afford to make such jokes. As we saw in Luighi's case, the sanction against Cerro Porteño was a tremendous disrespect."

Palmeiras' president, Leila Pereira, expressed disbelief at Domínguez's remarks, suggesting they were so appalling that they seemed AI-generated. She has also raised the possibility of Brazilian clubs leaving CONMEBOL to join CONCACAF, citing dissatisfaction with the confederation's handling of discrimination.

This incident underscores the growing pressure on CONMEBOL to take more decisive action against racism and ensure a more inclusive environment for all participants in South American football.
