ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay – A new landmark has been set for domestic tourism in Paraguay. The 'Route of the Castles' (La Ruta de los Castillos), a new tourism program exploring the majestic castles and rich culture of the Guairá and Cordillera departments, has been officially unveiled. This initiative, promoted with the support of the National Tourism Secretariat of Paraguay (Senatur), was formally announced on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at an event held at Turista Róga.

A Blend of Regional Economic Activation and Sustainable Tourism

The 'Route of the Castles' is designed to be more than just a sightseeing tour; it is a catalyst for regional economic development. This project, a joint effort between the tourism secretariat and private companies, aims to promote local job creation, enhance traditional gastronomy, and advance folk arts, fostering the sustainable development of the local communities. Guairá and Cordillera, renowned for their stunning natural landscapes and the warm hospitality of their residents, are expected to offer visitors a unique and enriching experience.

Key Destinations: An Invitation to the Middle Ages

The tourist route is scheduled to officially commence on Sunday, November 16, centering around two symbolic attractions:

Castillo Echauri: Located in the Independencia district of the Guairá department. This medieval-style castle was constructed by the architect Guillermo Echauri, inspired by his roots in the Navarra region of Spain. The castle is nestled amidst the green hills and forests of the Ybytyruzú mountain range, occupying a site of approximately 17 hectares where nature and architecture harmonize. Once a family retreat, it is now open to the public and has become an icon of Guairá tourism.

Note: Castillo Echauri is situated in the Ybytyruzú mountain range, along the road connecting Ruta Blas Garay and Colonia Independencia. It features a 22-meter-high tower built atop a rocky hill approximately 40 meters tall.
Castillo Caballero Templario (Knight Templar Castle): Located in Tobatí, Cordillera department. Reminiscent of the Middle Ages, this captivating site began as the dream of a family passionate about medieval culture and nature. It is located at the 65 km mark of the Tobatí-Caacupé route, next to a famous hill viewpoint, offering visitors camping and unique experiences to fully immerse themselves in the medieval atmosphere.

Tourism Package Information

The cost for the 'Route of the Castles' tourism package is G. 250,000, which includes transportation, professional guides, experiential activities, and snacks, ensuring a distinctive journey from start to finish.

A Declaration for the Future

Andrés Ortiz, General Director of Tourism Products, attending on behalf of the Minister of Tourism, Angie Duarte, emphasized the agency's commitment to promoting sustainable, responsible, and accessible tourism. "Our goal is to strengthen domestic tourism by highlighting Paraguay’s nature, local traditions, and national identity," he stated.

The private sector also affirmed that this proposal is a tool for economic and social development, calling it an innovative opportunity to illuminate local history and architecture and support local tourism entrepreneurs. This journey is anticipated to be more than just a trip—it is expected to be a driving force for sustainable development, improving the quality of life and creating opportunities for local residents.
