Dar es Salaam Set to House Hyper-Modern Printing Plant, Boosting Media Independence

DAR ES SALAAM – The Tanzanian media landscape is poised for a significant upgrade as the government accelerates the construction of a hyper-modern newspaper printing plant at the Tanzania Standard Newspapers (TSN) headquarters. Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamisi Mwinjuma, revealed on March 6, 2025, that the project is progressing steadily, signaling a major step towards enhancing the nation’s media infrastructure and independence.

During an official visit to the TSN headquarters, located along the Mandela Road Expressway/TAZARA, Mwinjuma provided a positive update on the construction, which has reached 53.1% completion. TSN, the publisher of prominent national newspapers including the Daily News, SpotiLEO, HabariLEO, Sunday News, and their digital counterparts, is set to benefit significantly from this new facility.

“This project is crucial for TSN’s future,” Mwinjuma stated. “Once completed, TSN will not only achieve self-sufficiency in its printing needs but also extend its services to other institutions, reducing reliance on private entities. This is a testament to the government’s commitment to strengthening our national media.”

Currently, TSN outsources its printing operations to a private company, a situation the government aims to rectify with the completion of the new plant. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure that national media outlets are well-equipped to serve their vital role in informing and engaging the public.

The Deputy Minister also underscored the critical role of TSN in communicating government initiatives, particularly in the lead-up to the 2025 General Elections. “As the voice of the government, TSN plays a pivotal role in fostering a strong relationship between the government and its citizens,” Mwinjuma emphasized. “We expect TSN to deliver accurate and timely information, ensuring that the public is well-informed.”

Asha Dachi, Managing Director of TSN, expressed her gratitude for the government’s support and reiterated the company’s commitment to upholding its mission as a trusted media outlet. “Our vision is to serve as a reliable bridge between the government and the people,” Dachi said. “We are dedicated to fulfilling this role with utmost professionalism and integrity.”

The new printing plant is expected to significantly enhance TSN’s operational efficiency and output quality. It will feature advanced printing technology, enabling the production of high-quality newspapers and other publications. This upgrade is anticipated to boost TSN’s competitive edge in the rapidly evolving media landscape.

Furthermore, Mwinjuma assured TSN that the government is committed to addressing the challenges faced by the company, ensuring that employees work in a conducive environment. This commitment reflects the government’s recognition of the importance of a well-supported and effective national media.

The completion of the hyper-modern printing plant will mark a milestone in Tanzania’s media development, reinforcing the country’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and independent press. As the project progresses, stakeholders eagerly anticipate the operational launch, which promises to transform the printing and publishing industry in Tanzania.
