Asunción, Paraguay - The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and the Paraguayan Olympic Committee (COP) announced on March 25th the signing of a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at fostering collaboration and mutual growth in the field of sports development.

This strategic alliance follows extensive dialogue and collaborative efforts between the two national Olympic bodies, laying the groundwork for long-term cooperation in athlete training, knowledge exchange, and overall sports advancement.

The MOU establishes a robust framework for cooperation in key areas such as high-performance sports, human resource development, sharing of technical expertise, and capacity building. It also includes specific initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for physical activity among athletes in both nations, leveraging shared resources for mutual benefit.

Camilo Pérez López Moreira, President of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, and Mario Silenti recently visited Guyana, where they held high-level meetings with the GOA Executive Committee, the Honorable Charles Ramson Jr., Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, government officials, and key stakeholders. They also toured local sports facilities, demonstrating a strong commitment to building close ties with the Guyanese sports fraternity.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the partnership, President Pérez López Moreira stated, "This agreement with the Guyana Olympic Association reinforces our commitment to the development of sport in the region. Through this MOU, we will foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the growth of our athletes and experts, further strengthening the Olympic bond between our nations."

Key Cooperation Projects:

Athlete Development: Providing Guyanese athletes, from youth to senior levels, with training opportunities ranging from one to six months at Paraguay's high-performance training centers and local leagues.
Training and Competition: Supporting Guyanese coaches and athletes with high-intensity training, from short-term programs to specialized one to two-year programs, aimed at enhancing skills and performance. Facilitating joint training sessions in Guyana for Paraguayan athletes and coaches, primarily in athletics and rowing.
Coaching Development: Offering Guyanese coaches specialized training and educational opportunities with Paraguay's top experts to improve coaching methodologies and technical expertise.
Equipment Support: Providing sports equipment to support mass participation, talent identification, and school-based programs across Guyana's ten administrative regions. Supplying additional competition equipment for hosting international events.
National Sports Facility Development: Exploring potential funding and collaboration for the construction of a national high-performance training facility in Guyana to provide an elite training environment and position the nation as a host for regional and international competitions.
Paraguayan Cricket Development: Guyana to play a leading role in the development of cricket in Paraguay through training, coaching expertise, and technical guidance.
Godfrey Munroe, President of the GOA, emphasized the transformative potential of the agreement, stating, "This collaboration is a watershed moment that will provide our athletes and coaches with much-needed training opportunities, scholarship possibilities, and high-performance environments. It is also a strategic investment in human resource development and plants the seeds for the future growth of our sporting ecosystem."

He further highlighted the broader implications of the partnership, noting its role in fostering cultural and sporting exchange. "This initiative will serve as a catalyst for deeper cultural and sporting exchange between our nations through knowledge transfer, shared methodologies, and mutual respect. Sport will be the bridge that brings the people of Guyana and Paraguay closer together," added President Munroe.

The GOA expressed its gratitude to COP President Camilo Pérez López Moreira, the Government of Paraguay, and all stakeholders who contributed to making this collaboration a reality.

This MOU represents a commitment to the Olympic spirit and is expected to yield lasting benefits for the sporting communities of both Guyana and Paraguay.
