Tripoli, Libya – In a significant move towards gender equality and inclusive governance, the Minister of State for Women’s Affairs in Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU), Houria Al-Tarmal, held crucial discussions with Hana Tetteh, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative to Libya, and her deputy, Stephanie Koury. The meeting focused on strategies to bolster the participation of Libyan women in all facets of national life, particularly in decision-making roles.

The discussions, held at the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) headquarters in Tripoli, centered on developing robust mechanisms to safeguard and advance women's rights. Minister Al-Tarmal and the UN representatives explored avenues to empower Libyan women across various sectors, ensuring equitable access to opportunities and reinforcing their presence in leadership positions.

"Enhancing the role of Libyan women is not just a matter of justice, but a critical component of building a stable and prosperous Libya," stated Minister Al-Tarmal. "We are committed to working closely with the UN and other partners to ensure that women's voices are heard and their contributions are valued."

Hana Tetteh reiterated the UN's unwavering commitment to supporting Libya's efforts in promoting gender equality. "The United Nations is dedicated to assisting Libya in its journey towards achieving greater inclusivity and empowering women to take their rightful place in shaping the nation's future," Tetteh emphasized. "We believe that women's participation is essential for sustainable peace and development."

The meeting also addressed the challenges faced by Libyan women, including security concerns, limited access to education and economic opportunities, and the persistent cultural barriers that hinder their full participation in society. The discussions touched on the necessity of addressing these challenges through targeted programs and policy reforms.

This collaboration is particularly timely, as Libya navigates a complex political transition. The increased participation of women in political processes, including the upcoming elections, is seen as crucial for ensuring a stable and representative government. The UN has been actively supporting initiatives aimed at increasing women's representation in electoral bodies and political parties.

Furthermore, the discussions highlighted the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, which underscores the vital role of women in conflict resolution and peacebuilding. The UN and the Libyan government agreed to strengthen their partnership in promoting women's involvement in peace processes and security sector reforms.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to ongoing dialogue and cooperation, with both sides pledging to work together to implement concrete actions that will enhance the status and participation of Libyan women. Future meetings are planned to monitor progress and address emerging challenges.
