Isa Zega, a transgender influencer in Indonesia, has sparked widespread controversy after performing the Umrah pilgrimage as a woman.
Mufti Maman, a member of the Indonesian parliament, has denounced Zega's actions as blasphemy. "We urge law enforcement, police, and related parties to immediately arrest Isa Zega. Such actions that insult Islam cannot be allowed to continue," Mufti stated on Tuesday.
The Mufti argued that despite undergoing gender reassignment surgery, Islamic law still considers Zega a biological male. Therefore, Zega should have followed the rituals for men during the Umrah pilgrimage. "I am very concerned because I have received many messages on social media about this transgender individual, known as Mami Online, Isa Zega, and Sarahul," he added.
Citing a fatwa issued by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the Mufti asserted that Islamic law does not recognize sex reassignment. Individuals who have undergone such procedures, he claimed, must follow the worship guidelines corresponding to their original biological condition.
The Mufti further referenced Article 156A of the Indonesian Criminal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment for blasphemy. "Blasphemy is punishable under Article 156A of the Criminal Code. We hope that legal proceedings will be carried out swiftly," he said.
