SpaceX Pursues 456 Starship Launches Annually—Pushing to Launch the World's Largest Rocket Like Daily Commercial Airlines

SpaceX, the American private aerospace company, has initiated preparations to launch "Starship"—the largest and most powerful launch vehicle ever built by humanity—up to 456 times a year. This equates to one or two launches per day, a frequency comparable to international passenger flights operating on popular overseas routes.

When Starship lifts off, it burns a massive amount of flammable chemical propellant stored within its body and emits tremendous noise, which can impact public safety and the natural environment. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), responsible for reviewing the application to increase launch frequency, plans to hold public hearings for local residents next month.

Review Underway for "1 to 2 Launches Per Day"

According to the local scientific community last week, the FAA has received a request from SpaceX to launch Starship up to 456 times annually, initiating administrative procedures to determine whether to grant approval. The location designated by SpaceX for these launches is Starbase in Texas, which is currently utilized for Starship liftoffs.

Following its inaugural launch in 2023, the approved launch limit for Starship was set at 5 times per year through 2025, and has since been adjusted to 25 times per year. This cap was established by the FAA to account for potential inconveniences such as noise impact and the restriction of maritime and aviation traffic. SpaceX is now attempting to increase this limit by a staggering 18-fold.

If SpaceX achieves its goal, the skies over Texas will undergo a complete transformation. Starship would soar into the air one to two times daily. Such a frequent launch cycle matches the departure frequency of international passenger flights on high-demand global routes. Never before in human history has any launch vehicle traveled into space with such regularity.

What makes Starship so significant that SpaceX is pushing to increase launch frequencies to this extent? It functions as a "large-scale space bus." Measuring 124 meters in length, it generates 8,240 metric tons of engine thrust. It is both the largest and most powerful rocket ever built by humans, capable of carrying up to 100 people. Historically, no launch vehicle created by humanity has ever transported more than 10 passengers at a time. For SpaceX, Starship is the ultimate strategic asset to completely dominate the global space transportation market.

The challenge lies in the high likelihood of complications if Starship is launched on a daily basis. The FAA plans to closely examine whether Starship poses a potential threat to densely populated areas during flight, focusing on "public safety." Launch vehicles travel at immense speeds, possess enormous bulk, and carry vast amounts of flammable propellants to generate thrust. An accidental crash into a residential area would result in unavoidable mass casualties.

Environmental impact assessments are also scheduled. Authorities are expected to thoroughly evaluate whether marine life could be exposed to excessive noise or vibrations, and whether air and water pollution pose legitimate concerns. Additionally, the review will address potential issues linked to national security and diplomacy, alongside insurance frameworks governing launch operations.

The FAA announced, "We plan to hold a total of five public hearings in Texas next month to gather public input." This process could potentially ignite conflicts or disagreements between SpaceX, local residents, and environmental organizations.

Preparing for a Surge in Customer Demand

In reality, 456 launches a year is an excessively high figure given Starship's current operational status. Starship was launched 3 times this year and 5 times last year, failing to even reach the current annual ceiling of 25 launches.

So why is SpaceX pursuing administrative approval for 456 annual launches? Industry observers attribute this to the rapid maturation of Starship technology. During its 14th test flight last month, Starship successfully deployed Starlink satellites into space and commenced operations, successfully completing an orbit around the entire Earth. It functioned reliably as a transport vehicle beyond our planet.

During the upcoming 15th test flight expected next month, SpaceX plans to attempt to guide not only the first-stage booster—which has successfully been recovered multiple times—but also the remaining second-stage rocket back to the launch pad for recovery. The core operational framework of Starship involves driving launch costs down to unprecedented global lows through "rocket reusability." The company aims to demonstrate this capability in actual practice.

Last week, Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, emphasized, "The only way to expand our consciousness beyond Earth is by utilizing a fully reusable orbital launch vehicle."

Once reusability and space transport capabilities are publicly proven, a wave of companies is likely to queue up, requesting that SpaceX deliver their satellites into Earth orbit. From SpaceX's perspective, securing the necessary administrative approvals in advance to increase Starship's launch frequency at any moment is a pragmatic business strategy.

The FAA stated, "Stakeholders can submit their information or research findings at the public hearings." Attention is now focused on how the FAA and the general public will evaluate the application to increase Starship's launch frequency—a decision that will heavily influence SpaceX's future corporate valuation.
