Demolition and reconstruction of an aging bridge as part of Section 13 of Urban Railway Line 2
Phased construction without full closure; minimizing congestion with detour information

The Daejeon Metropolitan City announced that it will implement phased traffic restrictions on parts of Daedong Bridge starting October 15, as part of the Daedong Bridge reconstruction project under Section 13 of the Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2 tram construction project.

Completed in 1965, Daedong Bridge is an aging bridge that has been in service for about 61 years. It is located between Daejeon Station and Daedong Station on Urban Railway Line 2.

In connection with the construction of Urban Railway Line 2, the city plans to demolish the existing aging bridge and build a new one capable of accommodating both tram operations and regular vehicle traffic. The new bridge will be constructed with a total of six lanes, including two tram lanes and four general vehicle lanes.

Traffic restrictions will be implemented partially for approximately 21 months, from October 15, 2026, to June 16, 2028, along the section between Daedong Five-Way Intersection and Bestian Hospital Four-Way Intersection near the bridge. However, the period and scope of restrictions may be adjusted depending on construction progress and site conditions.

To minimize public inconvenience caused by the long-term project, the city will divide the bridge in half and carry out construction in two phases. Phase 1 is scheduled from October 2026 to June 2027, and Phase 2 from July 2027 to June 2028.

During the construction period, half of the current four-round-trip lanes will be restricted while two round-trip lanes will be maintained, allowing vehicle traffic without full closure.

In Phase 1, half of the bridge from Daedong Five-Way Intersection toward Daejeon Station will be demolished first, followed by the construction of a new bridge. Once Phase 1 is complete, vehicle traffic will be shifted to the new bridge, and Phase 2 will proceed by demolishing the existing bridge on the opposite side to build a new one.

To minimize traffic congestion and safety accidents caused by long-term lane reductions, the city plans to separate the construction zones and vehicle traffic lanes with safety facilities, and deploy traffic safety facilities and signal personnel at major points.

In particular, during commute hours, the entry and exit of construction vehicles will be managed flexibly. Following the partial restriction, CCTV and control systems will be utilized to continuously monitor surrounding traffic flow. Signal operations and traffic management measures will also be flexibly adjusted according to traffic conditions to minimize inconvenience to citizens.

As traffic congestion is expected around the Daedong Five-Way Intersection and Daedong Bridge during the construction period, vehicles simply passing through the area are advised to detour to surrounding roads such as Chungmu-ro, Gyejok-ro, Dongjungang-ro, and Gayang-ro.

Lee Jeong-gap, head of the Tram Construction Division at Daejeon City, stated, "This project aims to secure the structural safety of Daedong Bridge by demolishing and rebuilding the bridge, which is over 60 years old, through the construction of Urban Railway Line 2. As traffic inconvenience is expected due to the long-term construction, we kindly ask citizens to use surrounding detour roads whenever possible."
